My friend at work has really dry skin...he says lotion doesn't
help. He's decided the only remedy is for him to eat pure oil/fat/lard/etc.

But seriously..I wonder if that'd help?

3. When my skin was extremely dry
I'd put Crisco on it. Did the same thing w/ my daughter's diaper rash.

Moisturizes your skin and clears rashes up immediately-apply directly after bath.

4. WOW! Just when I thought the depths of human stupidity had already been reached...
lotions don't work? Bullshit.

Tell himn to get a humidifier for his home, drink the amount of water he is supposed to be drinking, use lotion, stay out of the wind, and use lotion again. Quite often, in fact.

7. Oh come now Rabrrrrrr....
I'd certainly expect you to advocate the *EXTREME!!!* use of lard to eliminate human stupidity, not giving actual advice. :D

9. He shouldn't just eat it, he should shove it up his ass! And bathe in it,
at 350 degrees, every morning for an hour!!

23. a lot of lotions contain alcohol - ironically a drying agent as are some of the
artificial stenches many commercial lotions contain. At any rate they all work better if applied after a shower or bath to trap moisture in the surface layers. Any kind of fat or oil will work, some may smell odd or leave stains, but the principle is the same.

Humidifier in the house and consuming plenty of water will help too.

5. I have a friend like that.
He insists that having people pee on him is the only cure for his dry skin. Perhaps you should suggest this to your friend.

6. he might try coconut oil
it's solid at room temp. I used to use in in my bath...but it makes the tub really slippery. I don't think his plan is really gonna work, the body will just store that stuff as fat. The B vitamins are really good for skin...maybe he might try some of the products like "hair, skin and nails" that GNC has or some similiar stuff.

I LOVE the stuff. I make a coconut milk and honey with oatmeal scrub.

10. It's possible he has a fungus if it's on his feet.
He'll need prescription strength drugs to eradicate it, the OTC stuff won't touch it.

In our family "dry skin" means the skin has deep cracks that are bleeding just so you have an idea of how "dry" I'm talking....

Someone on DU recommended tea tree oil 3X/day. They said to wash and let the surface air dry then apply the tea tree oil. That worked for my husband's hands (we're farmers!) but my feet needed an Rx.

12. I mentioned Crisco above.
If it's just really dry skin (and not an infection) it does work.

Years ago I took a client (I worked in mental health) to an appointment w/ her dermatologist. The dermatologist saw my hands while I was at the appointment-they were cracked and bleeding from constant handwashing. My insurance wouldn't pick up the tab on any special lotions so the dermatologist recommended using plain Crisco. You apply every night directly after bathtime w/o toweldrying and then cover the area. (example: dry feet-slather on Crisco and wear cotton socks. Hands-wear cotton gloves.)

The difference was remarkable. In a couple of days my hands were healing. Regular lotion didn't help them no matter how often I applied it. He was right-it was the Crisco.

16. That works with my oldest daughter
she puts on either pure fat or vitamin E oil and cotton gloves overnight. It takes about a week but it will work....

20. And it's really cheap.
Most households have veg shortening around.

It's always worth a shot, compared to some of the products out there.

13. Has he tried Kiehl's Intensive Treatment?

I need it for my feet, which get horribly dry and cracked if I don't use the stuff. It's very thick, and almost feels like you're rubbing lard into your skin, but the greasy feel only lasts until you've rubbed it in. The lotion is completely unscented and is not tested on animals.

14. I'll forward him the link
We work in the coffee industry, he handles big burlap bags of green coffee beans all day, not to mention the dust of roasting/grinding etc. It's kinda horrible, if it wasn't so awesome. :D

Thanks, GoG. :hi:

18. Oil of Olay w/ Shea Butter body wash - I've had trouble with dry skin
for years in the winter, and it doesn't help that I shower twice a day every other day following trips to the gym, but this stuff really does an excellent job keeping my skin feeling smooth and moisturized...

19. what helps
Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 11:42 PM by pitohui
as another poster says, he should be checked to be sure he doesn't have a fungus, he will need meds for that, very dry and crackling feet are often infected by a contagious fungus, sometimes dry and crackling hands are as well although for whatever reason this is more rare

in my experience i have found it most helpful to eat only pure "real" fats, no "smart" fads, no margarines, just real fats to which we have adapted over thousands of years, these would include olive oil, genuine butter (no imitations), and lard are all fine

he may find that eating more dairy is helpful as well, as it is a more pleasant way to up the intake of healthy fat, COLD water fish is good but farmed salmon is NOT a cold water fish and won't help, atlantic salmon will be a farmed fish, pacific salmon is often okay tho

while it is true that most lotion is bogus if you really have dry skin, i have found that rosebud salve (comes in a tiny round tin) and vermont bag balm (comes in a big green square tin) are most helpful, before i discovered the vermont bag balm for my hands i could not even bear to touch paper any more, it was that bad, rosebud is more for the lips but it will work on the dry hands in a pinch

but, again, he should see a dermatologist first because once in a rare while a derm actually helps someone, not me, no matter how many i consult  but someone somewhere occasionally is helped by their medical knowledge, once the problems easily solved by drugs are ruled out that is when you have to fall back on weird high fat diets and strange potions

both rosebud and vermont bag balm are pretty cheap considering what they do, i'd recommend them to anybody

hope it helps

oddly when i went to a higher fat diet i lost weight, and i did not need to lose weight, but i am okay now, it does screw w. your appetite though, oh and don't forget the nuts, they can be a good way of getting the natural fat if you don't feel like eating anything you can always pop a few walnuts

21. Three things:
Drink lots of water

Take warm showers, not hot showers

Turn down the heat

Lotions (or anything else you smear on your skin) of any kind are a temporary fix at best.

25. Two ideas:
He needs to get some biotin I believe; or maybe some fish oils. The people at the vitamin place should be able to advise. Maybe even some CLA.

Also; if he ever would be open to trying this; he should get some Dream Cream from Lush.

I swear by this stuff; and so does my husband. I know the price is a bit much; but to me it's worth it.

26. the dermatologist
prescribed Aveeno for my son's dry skin. It's the only one with some ingredient (I forget what... dimethecone, maybe?)

Also - he has to use DOVE soap. The plain kind.

Though before we used the lotion, olive oil in the tub helped. Also Burts Bees baby oil (apricot).
