My Christmas present paid off already...
Heard a siren, turned on the police scanner radio that Mrs R gave me, heard where the truck had rolled over on the highway on-ramp, hustled over there with Mr Lens and my press card, shot pix, and sold one to the Hartford paper.

Ka-ching! 50 bux for 10 minutes' work. Not much, but a couple every month adds up to beer money anyway.

2. I have a scanner and listen to it at work.
It was one of the cheaper models but I love it.

A scanner is nice to have in case of bad weather.

4. How'd you score a press card?
In Kollyforniya, you need a CHP press pass to shoot accident scenes, etc., and you've gotta work for an authorized media outlet to get one. And they're good for only a year.

My last one was for 2003. x(

Side story: Long before I had one, I came across a car that had gone through the guard rail on an overpass; the front end of the car was hanging over the freeway. I jammed home, got my gear, came back and shot it. Then I noticed one of the cops had left his clipboard on the ground, so I started copying information off it for the cutline. The cop saw me and yelled, "Hey, whaddya doin'?" He could've made trouble, but I got off with "Next time, just ask me."

I jammed back home, developed the film, printed a couple shots, typed up the cutlines and ran 'em down to the paper. One ran on A2 the next day. I got $10. :grr:

5. According to the US Supreme Court three years ago, if you own a website that

disseminates news, you have the same legal standing as a newspaper.

And I run such a website.

13. According to the Constitution (that dammned piece
of paper)

You don't need no stikin' press card either.

16. Yeah
Once, a reporter and I were going to a fire up in the hills. The sheriff's department had the road blocked with a lone, rookie deputy turning people back. We ID'd ourselves and flashed our CHP passes and she still said, "I'm sorry, I can't let you pass."

The n00b was just doing her job. :eyes:

18. They don't put the same pics on the website as they do the the printed paper. Because then
they'd have to pay more. And they're cheap bastards.

21. Yes. That's a vicious ramp, and needs to be treated with respect. That driver didn't
respect it. Bet he will in the future, if he ever gets his CDL back.
