There are 15 people at my house right now tearing through my roof
and i'm beside myself. i'm at the office but the roofers showed up early and started tearing off the roof of my new england colonial (built in 1877)

it's freaking me out. never done a project like this before (of this magnitude) :scared:

i'm sure things will all be fine but DAMN it's a hell of a job

breathe in ..... breathe out ...... breathe in .......

3. So, what kind of roof are you having installed?
I'm noticing more metal roofs here in PA in recent years.

4. Ohhhh it's INTENTIONAL
Well that's all right then! If it had come as a surprise, well, just imagine--!

Yeah, okay, I'm being silly.

Speaking of old houses...Tale of stupidity thanks to my fundie-Catholic Rush-loving aunt who saw our 1876 renovation-in-progress for the first time Christmas Day--even though we've been living there a year--we just couldn't handle her reaction to our devastation one minute earlier:

Comment to my mother on their way back home: "Gee, they have a LOT of work to do on that house. They should hire someone and have it done right away!"

NooooOOooooooooo...REALLY??? WHY DIDN'T WE THINK OF THAT?! :sarcasm:

I'm going to mail her a copy of our next bank statement. But I don't think it would sink in even then, alas...

6. Are you at home?
Wait'll they start dropping bundles of shingles up there. The whole house will shake. How far are they tearing off? Mine had to be removed to the rafters, plywood laid down where there was lath and wood shakes.

Fun job. Take pictures.

7. Woah..you're getting tear off too for that price?
I read your other thread about writing the check for $6500..was that the amount? That's much less than I've been quoted..most have been for around $10,000..lowest was $8900. Not all that much roof either..although right now I can't remember how many squares they were figuring.

Glad you have lots of workers..it won't take long that way. I've had two roofs done before on other houses and I only had one guy on the first(contract with a major place too..but one worker)who took days and days and that was roofing over current shingles. The 2nd time I had 2-3 and then 4 to finish it up.

I've never had a tear off either(other than DH doing the garage roof himself)..and just the thought of people on my two story farm house ripping through the roofing..eeeeekkkkkk!

Do you have those old boards on your roof? Ours are like 1 1/2" thick..totally unable to match them if I need replacement anywhere.

8. no shit, 6 K and 15 workers?
man. We put a metal roof on our old house more than ten years ago and it was over 10K then. Around 4 guys I think. We did most of the tear-off, they laid a lot of new plywood.

18. We'd thought about metal..but I can't imagine what it would cost
with the estimates I've already received for the regular type shingle.

We had a regular roof done..asphalt shingle over existing roof back in 2000 on a place we had in Michigan. Ran us about $4500.

17. I wanna live where you do..
It seems all construction type work around here is higher than some areas. Sounds like you're getting a good deal.

13. Did you cover everything you want to keep clean?
We had new windows installed in our house. Somehow, even the dishes in the cabinets got dusty. Cover everything with as much plastic as you can find.
