Squeech plays live in Boston
Friday night at Jacques Cabaret in Boston's theatre district (79 Broadway, Boston, 617-426-8902). Arlington is the closest T station.

This just fell into my lap. A couple improvising ensembles from out of town are playing and invited me to open. Their original idea was for me to improvise with a band, which I would love to do-- Tim and Jon and I have been jamming our little fingers off in rehearsal, and we've discussed doing more of that in front of people. Unfortunately family responsibilities vis a vis the holidays interposed themselves, and consequently Tim can't play, so that idea was out.

Meanwhile, I acquired a new instrument last week. I had bought an old project guitar at a yard sale some years back, a Japanese cheapie missing its bridge and tailpiece. My idea for it was to put two more tuning pegs on and rejigger it to accommodate eight strings (in four pairs), converting it into a Celtic bouzouki. Took me long enough to get around to it, but I just had luthier Jim Mouradian at Cambridge Music do the conversion for me (plug: he's the guy that built that amazing space-age bass guitar for Chris Squire of Yes; we here in Boston are so privileged to have him around to work on our instruments!) and I picked it up on Friday. I'm having wonderful fun woodshedding on it, rummaging around in the attic of my mind for all the old jig and reel tunes I can remember, and a few actual songs (including an arrangement of Richard Thompson's "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" that I'm really happy with). So that's what I'm going to play at Jacques, alternating bits of the Celtic and pseudo-Celtic repertoire with improv, which should appeal to hardly anyone :-)

1. Kick
I emailed the same thing around my office, and co-workers were seriously asking me whether it was a joke. I gotta send them the one about the Detroit court case, so they can tell the difference.
