...are the ones that use "aholic" to denote addiction to some activity or other. Shopaholic, chocaholic, foodaholic. I've never heard of substances called shopahol, chocahol or foodahol so, to echo your sentiment above...WTF!?!

It was developed in the '70s as an alternative to fossil fuels. The program was dropped when they tried it in cars and found the only places they'd go were shoe stores.
