I forgot how tragic a movie "Monster" was.
It was brutal. And what superb acting by Theron and Ricci! As awful of a human being that she was, you could kind of see what pushed her over the edge. And Christina Ricci's character was sad, too. Pressured by family to straighten up, she jumped for the extreme.

That is just a depressing film.

1. Maybe I'm just easy
but as callous as her crimes were, I thought she was a very sympathetic character. What a life she had dealt to her. I couldn't help but root for her and her doomed attempt to live a normal life was especially sad.

I knew next to nothing about Charlize Theron before and was very, very, impressed with the job she did in this movie.

And you're right, it was a very depressing story.

7. She really had to get into that role.
I imagine even to play a role like that would be depressing, especially the way she immersed herself in it. She did the same thing in "North Country". I have great respect for her.

Oh, and welcome to DU!

3. Have you seen a picture of the real Aileen Wuornos?
Theron could have been her twin, with the makeup job they did on her for the movie. The resemblance is very freaky.

The real Aileen:

6. Theron was absolutely riveting in that movie
I, too, felt some sympathy for Aileen. She had a really shitty life, pretty much from Day One.

8. Exactly.
And the changes of facial expression, and mannerisms were spot on to any footage I have seen.

She really deserved that Oscar.

On a side note, part of it was filmed in Orlando, one scene very close to where I used to work.
