Does your supervisor call in to you when he's not coming in?
On Friday my supervisor mentioned that he would not be in Monday morning because of an obligation with his daughter. By 2:30pm today he still had not come in or called, so I called him. He said he had decided not to come in because the day was already half over. Between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm I had told at least 10 people that he would be in this afternoon.

His manager wasn't here today either so maybe he figured what the hell.

Of course if I did something like this it wouldn't be cool. The thing is, its not just inconvenient for me (I ended up working till 6pm because I had to finish things myself)- it makes him look bad when nobody knows where he is.

1. My boss let's us guess when he's coming in.
He takes a lot of days off, and he takes a lot of vacations, and it's surprising when clients know but we don't. He mentions his upcoming trips and travels and days off to people on the phone but never tells us.

2. Mine always calls someone.
Or he emails us and lets us know ahead of time. He's a very dedicated, incredible supervisor.

3. I told him today "you should have called us"
"Well", he said, "I called my manager but he took the day off."

"Right, so we didn't get a message at all."

No apology. I'm more important than you, so I don't have to let you know when I'm not coming in.

4. When I was the boss
my Sailors always knew my whereabouts and how to reach me. Its called leadership. I seldom wasn't at work and would never leave without having a subordinate in charge. Your supervisor should at the very least have a nice one way chat from his boss.

5. What's funny is that he just took a 10 week course on being a supervisor
I guess they didn't cover communication. I had a splitting headache yesterday and I was waiting for him to come in so I could leave. Instead I ended up working late and getting home at 7:30pm.
