Why do they do that? Why not just say "© 1978"?

I can translate most Roman numerals... can you? I especially enjoy the challenge of translating the ones that appear briefly at the end (or beginning) of old TV shows. (© MCMLXIV Screen Gems - All Rights Reserved)

The largest and longest combinations can be confusing. Also, there appears to be an alternate and more "relaxed" set of rules that I haven't learned.

1. The Simpsons covered this the best I think..
In class they were learning roman numerals.

When the class stopped paying attention Mrs. Crabapple (I think thats how her name is spelled) says something like "Class, no, if you don't pay attention and learn these numbers you won't be able to figure out which year movies were made in".

I think roman numerals look cool...

4. Were they using roman numerals?
Wonder how they did that without a zero?

5. The Arabs keep math and science going for most of history
While Europe was muddling through the Dark Ages waiting for someone to invent the Renaissance the Arabs were making all the important advances in math and science. Maybe we would all have been better off if the Crusades had been in reverse?

6. Recently I don't see roman numerals
in movies anymore. Guess they heard the cry of the people.

Roman numbers seem classier... something like a 'classic'.
