To all my conservative friends
Hello. Been kind of bitter year between us. With all this name calling, and fighting about politics and such. I've long realized we don't see eye to eye on many things, but I've always respected your points of view. I like to think we both recognize that all any of us want is what's best for our country. Sure, we're going to differ about the best way to do it, and maybe even what is best in the end. But I know that you want the best America we can have, and I hope you know that I do too.

I'd guess that 2004 is going to be even uglier. But it doesn't have to be. I think that each side has demonized everyone on the other side, mostly for their own benefit, and it just leads to this ugliness of name calling, anger and hostility. It does no one any good. It just makes you dislike us more, and we dislike you more. And for what? Because you loathed Clinton, and we loath Bush. It's stupid, frankly. I know that you're a good person, and I'd trust you with the keys to my house, and I think you'd feel the same about me.

If we were to sit down and talk about what we want for America, without worrying about what the parties say, or what the politicians say, I think we'd end up agreeing on more than we disagree on. We'd likely have different ways of getting there, but can any of us argue about wanting peace, prosperity, friends, family, safety and having some fun?

Anyway, I've taken enough of your time. Here's hoping that 2004 is a better year in America. Here's hoping we can stop the petty arguing about who's right and wrong about the small things, and start working together to fix all the big things. This is a great country we share, and it's up to all of us to make it better not worse. Happy New Year.

1. They need to quit watching Fox news first....
.. then they might me ok to talk to.

Great sentiments, but unfortunately you are dead right with this:
"I'd guess that 2004 is going to be even uglier"

What happened to Bush's pledge of being a UNITER. hahaha

5. you're a good person
I could never say with a straight face that I respected my conservative friend's views. I'm afraid they already suspect that I snicker behind their backs. :-)

6. Well said, but once the liquor wears off
things will be back to normal. We are going into a battle this year.

7. from a rare conservative posting on DU
Right on, brother, thanks for the post. (even though it probably wasn't directed at me)

Things have been pretty grim in 2003, I am hoping 2004 will be better.

Less politically charged.... there is far too much politics permeating everything.....

Maybe we can find some common ground....

I know it's off topic, and I haven't seen much about it here, (some though).. but what happened in the beautiful and historic city of Bam, and it's aftermath should teach us all a lesson. I am a big history buff so that one hit me particlularly hard out of all the stories of 2003. Something that was so beutiful and had stood there for so long... wiped out in an instant..(of course we all know the human toll) ..and what bothers me the most is I didn't know the place existed until it was destroyed.... that's an important lesson... that may happen to alot of things... we may not know we have them until they are gone.

Maybe I'm just bummed because I'm sitting alone on New Years eve while all my friends hare having a party...who knows...(now they are caling, but I.m not answering.. sheesh.. long story, but not much of a time for celebration)

One thing has struck me recently with the new year coming around at all... we are really all the same.

Most of our hopes and dreams are the same... and the faces that I see on TV from all these other countries and cultures.. they look just like me and you.

Happy new year, all....

Peace,
-Heyo
