Do you have a nickname?
Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 01:13 PM by LaraMN
I thought I'd never really had one, but I found out over Thanksgiving that my family used to call me "Lulu," when I was a kid. I have no recollection of this, and having a short name, I don't recall ever being called anything but "Lara".

I think my husband could use a nickname. His name is Nathaniel, and he NEVER goes by Nathan or Nate. Sometimes when I want to annoy him, I call him "'Than."

How about you? Do you have a nickname that people use frequently? If you do, do you like it?

1. My lips are sealed.
The "nickname" inflicted on me by High School was mean and demeaning. I don't do nicknames.

5. Yes. Butch.
OK, go ahead.
I've heard them all.
;-)

In the '40s it was the fashion to call little boy babies "Butch".
When the nurse brought me in to my mom all cleaned up for the first time she said "Here's your little Butch".
And that was 65 years ago and it stuck.

We were out to dinner and I accidentally said,"That would make MrsGrumpy very Harper" instead of the other way around. A nick name was born...and a username too! :hi:

My nickname, starting in high school was "Kool" - not a bad nickname to have. It's kind of faded away since I hit 30 about 10 years ago, though

It's mostly because the first syllable of my last name is pronounced that way.

23. Only from one person: my boss.
He sometimes calls me "Shiner," because when I came to my audition years ago I was sporting a great black eye from an unsuccessful mugging attempt upon me the week before.
They erroneously cut me from the audition, but later that day tracked me down and hired me, based on "missing that guy with the black eye."

However, universally speaking, if I'm known by a nickname, no one's telling me...:eyes:

In high school, I had about 50.

The funniest, though, was when I was in middle school. A guy in my gym class didn't know how to pronounce my name (I'm of Indian descent), so he tried to call me "Dhalsim," which gamers will recognize as the Indian guy from Street Fighter II.

But he couldn't even pronounce Dhalsim, so he called me "Dhashiki."

40. I've also noticed people will do it when they want a favor.
Recently I was playing bartender at a party and a girl who has always called me Jessica and started calling me Jessie when she realized I was the little sister of the guy she liked. I also become Jessie or Jessie Mae when people want something from me at work.

My family calls me Jessie but I'm Jessie Mae (somehow people think using my middle name will make me gullible but I digress) when they're really trying to talk me into something.

Those are from a few different times in my life though I still get all of them occasionally. My current nickname is J-Dawg started by a friend to annoy me. That's mostly what we use nicknames for, to annoy each other  My friend Vinnie was dubbed "Barbarino" by my sister 20+ years ago in 2nd grade and I still use it.

I used nicknames for a silly Christmas present for my friends (we usually just buy fun stuff for a Christmas party as presents)

46. Jack is actually my nickname.
My legal name is John, but everyone calls me Jack, and I've always know myself as a Jack. Causes confusion sometimes at the bank. Last week a bank teller asked me, "Are you sure Jack is a nickname for John"?

But my family used to call me "Gompers", after Samuel Gompers, the founder of the American Federation of Labor. They swore that whenever there was a chore to do I'd run and hide, which was not the case. If anyone was raised in an Italian Catholic household, you'd know that there's chores every minute of the day. Since my parents were Republican, I'm sure they found it funny to call unions lazy, as well as myself.

I was "Woody" for a long time. It was a riff off of this really bad haircut I had... made me look like Woody Woodstock. When I was little, some of the neighborhood kids had a nickname for me. Sometimes it was "the Professor" and *shudder* occasionally "the little Doctor". My mom called me JJ or Jennie Joe. I tried to get her to just stick with the Joe... hm, maybe that was a clue :-D

My real name is Julie, but my little brother called me "Ju" when he began talking. That stuck until I was about 12. Mom still occasionally calls me that, but it's rare. My mother named me after my grandmother Julia but didn't want confusion over who went by what name. Also, she's a big believer in making names as simple as possible. My sister and brother also have simple names.

My husband actually goes by his nickname and uses it professionally. He's had that nickname since he was 4 or 5, and since he has the same name as his father and grandfather (he's a III), it helps keep things straight.
