1. 7-0 Oklahoma!
This game did not start well for Nebraska. Stopped inside the ten on the opening kickoff, fumbled on their first offensive play, and then gave up a touchdown on the next play.

:D

Upon further review ...

If anything other than what came out of that official's mouth had come out, I wouldn't have been able to see the rest of the game. My television would have been in the street.

Whenever they start reviewing things, I have to scramble for something to throw at the TV. :)

Nebraska's putting something together on this drive.

USC was in a pretty good situation today, even if it didn't work out for the best.

8. My condolences ...

You ran up against a wall of pissed off frustration. You lose to your biggest rival four years in a row, and the records and talent tend to get thrown out the window. This is the kind of things that happen in OU-TX games.

I didn't expect to see what I saw, at all. USC obviously has the better team, but UCLA had its day to day.

9. 14-0 Oklahoma
After a bad call on the field that robbed Oklahoma of another turnover, Paul Thompson throws a 68-yard TD strike to Malcolm Kelly.

How does one get a job as a sports announcer? I mean, what are the qualifications?

In order for the Sooners to win tonight, "Thompson is going to have to play well."

No shit. :eyes:

Since they beat the team that beat Nebraska, after all

OU has really turned it around since the Texas game. It's not a lucky break so much as keeping their focus.

Nebraska, that might be a lucky break, but the lucky break for themis that they play in the Big 12 North ;)

18. Who would have thought ...

The division with teams like Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas State would be the "weak" division.

I'm sure the pendulum will swing as always, but it's been a bit of a shocker to me since the Big-12 was formed that the South division has generally been so much stronger, even when it doesn't win the (cough, cough) big game in Kansas City.

19. Especially given how the conference started
when Nebraska was still playing for championships and OU and Texas were coached by John Blake and Mackovic. Back then it looked like the south would forever be the weak sister. Times have changed, though, since Stoops came to Norman :)

20. AHHHH!!!!

You said that name, John Blake. I still have nightmares about trips to Dallas during the Blake years. :-)

Seriously, though, I find it interesting that OU's national championship team consisted primarily of players that Blake recruited and that they've struggled with the Big One ever since, even while having overall much better seasons.

Makes me wonder if Stoops and Blake wouldn't have made a good team, with Blake in the right position. Of course I realize that would never have happened ... can't go to something less than head coach on a team you coached poorly and be taken very seriously, but I still wonder.

Now the real nightmare was Schnellenberger. I wish I could forget that season entirely. It's just not a good thing when a fan can sit in the stands and call, with precision, what play is about to be run just by looking at the formation.

21. "nightmares about trips to Dallas"
Oy, me too. My first OU-Texas game was the 1998 game, when we gave up the 99 yard TD pass, among other embarassments

Stoops did have several of Blake's players, but he also brought a lot of his own guys in at keypositions--Heupel, Michael Thompson, and Derrick Strait, to name a few, and I think Bob recruited Roy Williams, Torrance Marshall, and Q Griffin too. Blake was a good recruiter, though, and was responsible for some of the key players on that team too. I think Blake might have been a good coach eventually, but he just wasn't ready at OU.

Now the real nightmare was Schnellenberger. I wish I could forget that season entirely. It's just not a good thing when a fan can sit in the stands and call, with precision, what play is about to be run just by looking at the formation.

Ugh! Amen to that. He really set the program back. :argh:

33. That Could Be
I know that at age 6 and 7, skipping may be the best part of any play!

Seriously, there was one unforgettable play in the fall season last month, in the tournament as a matter of fact.

Probably the best kicker takes the corner kick and bends that sucker in towards the goal and it was perfectly timed so that another kid head butts it on in!

This, in the first 5 minutes of the game. The other team just went, "oh shit" and we beat them.

Ended up having a different team show up for the championship, but it's all in fun and they are a lot of fun. Can kick pretty damned hard too! Practicing with them I had no shin guards on and was playing a defender to go around, and got the crap kicked out of my shin. Took me down almost. It was a hard kick.

:o

actually, they lost twice; it didn't have anything to do with an A&M loss.

That Arkansas game looks like it's turning into a barnburner. Of course, I only see the highlights when someone scores, so that might be skewing my view :)

I was flipping to it occasionally while watching USC-UCLA, and AR didn't seem to be playing well. Then a few minutes into the 3rd quarter, and AR is up by four after being down by ten. Then FL is up by ten, then three ... and now FL up by ten again, but AR driving, now intercepted ...

I'm getting whiplash.

With all the crazy rule changes the NCAA has done, this is one that needs serious consideration ... a team committing a penalty that ends up *benefiting* them.

I don't know the specific answer, but that kind of thing has always bugged me.

It's nice having a cyber-pseudo sports bar to share the victory with other OU fans.

I know what you mean about the Oregon game. If it weren't for that, OU would be right in the mix. But I'm still just really happy for the team to have come as far as they have. What a great season it's been.

Now I've just got to figure out a way to swing Fiesta Bowl tickets :) I've got in-laws in the Phoenix area, so my wife's on the phone lining up the plans :)

56. One negative comment ...
Edited on Sun Dec-03-06 12:47 AM by RoyGBiv
I'm watching the press conference with Stoops and Sooner players, and Paul Thompson just mentioned something strikes me to the core.

I do not like a lot of Sooner fans, actually fans in general who aren't really fans but just want to appear as fans when their team of choice is popular nationally in a good way.

What he said was in response to a question about the doubters at the beginning of the season, when OU was dropping in the polls even after they won. He said a lot of things about that, things that were diplomatic more than anything, but he also said he heard a lot of stuff from people who were "getting rid of their season tickets."

These people piss me off.

I attended 11 OU-TX games in a row. I was able to see OU beat TX in that magical year only by luck, because these fair-weather fans had not yet realized how special Heupel, the reconstituted Sooners, and Stoops were. (I remember hearing from people that Heupel was a fluke, had no talent, and when he went up against a real team like Texas, would fold in half. HA!!!) That is, I was still able to get tickets at an affordable price.

And then after that year, I could not afford the $200, then $500, the over a grand that people were asking for a pair of tickets to that game. I'd been there, as a fan, during the dark moments, cheering for my team. When they got good again, all these people came out of the woodwork trying to make a profit off it or decided that they could be supportive if the team looked like it was a winner.

Because I can't get face value tickets, I haven't been able to go to a game in 4 years. I could have gone to a couple home games this year after the Texas loss because I knew people who had season tickets who had given up. I didn't take that opportunity for work-related reasons.

Before seeing this interview, it had never really occurred to me that the players are aware of all this. No reason I shouldn't have realized that; I just hadn't. I wonder how much defeatism, at the hands of so-called fans, infected the Blake years and became the proverbial self-fulfilling prophecy.

Okay ... I shut up now. I'm happy for the OU players, not so happy for the people who'll make bank off selling tickets, and I'll make sure to tip my waiter/waitress extra for taking care of me during the game while I give my business to a local sports bar because I, as a rank and file fan, can't afford to go.

57. The good news is that Coach Stoops . . .
. . . desensitizes his team to these idiotic, unforgiving and demanding fans. When all is said and done, the team knows that those fans don't know shit about what is going on and end up laughing their asses off at the morons who paid their way through college. ;)
