The Appalachian trail is minor compared to off road stuff. I've been to Colorado. Vistas are great but you get to a certain altitute and everything looks the same. As well, all is Brown in Tucson....

But Maine: We've got the lakes of Minnesota, and the hills/mtns of Vermont (only steeper) We're the only state left in the lower 48 without a Milfoil infestestation in our lakes, and we continue to be the most heavily forested State despite the fact that Forestry is our largest industy.

Long boring story short... If you miss Maine you miss out on alot! :-)
