It's official, my parents think I'm crazy

Just got home this evening after a three day visit. They're both Faux watching Republicans, but not freepers. I made a pact with my mom that we wouldn't talk about politics but she couldn't help herself, so in one short response I made reference to the fact that the Kurds found Saddam first. Of course this sounded crazy to them because they only watch Faux. I offered to show them references, but they refused because it was, "just too crazy" and "our government wouldn't lie about something like that".

Right before I left my mom said that I shouldn't spend time getting news online and from foreign sources because everything on the Internet is a lie. Everything! I know they think I'm a complete loon. I also know that I'm not a nut, I'm just fully informed.

I'm afraid this is the mentality we, as well informed citizens are going to be up against this coming election season. There are lots of people who don't get any news other than CNN or Faux, and there are even more who don't get any news at all. To top it off, these people think we're nuts because we know the truth. What a country...

I remember seeing a story about it, and a big debate going both ways here on DU. I really was never coninced one way or the other. Was it ever fully established to your satisfaction? It was never even close to a shut case to me, not that I did any great research other than reading DU.

the people who stole the election, who outed a CIA agent, who lied to get us into a war, who trotted a severely injured young female soldier out for propaganda purposes - are you gonna believe a g.d. f***ing thing these cretins say? I certainly hope not. That being said, the whole story of Saddam's "capture" was absolutely RIDICULOUS.

3. You have summarized the problem

People are conditioned to believe America isnot just good. It is perfect and pure. When they can get 69% of the people in the September Washington Post poll that Saddam was involved in 9/11, the PTB think they can make Americans believe anything, including Bush is wonderful and not a war criminal, bent on raping the environment and the public treasury.

I usually tell people their thougts are being herded and if they do not read the Internet they cannot possibly know what is going on. But one thing about it, it is you that knows things they do not and that gets them to wondering if thought herding is all about bringing them blissful ignorance while the world and America burn around them.

Ask them what they know about medical marijuana and ask them why their 200 channels leave them so ignorant on the subject.

4. I mentioned the Kurd thing to three ladies at work

on a smoke break the other day, prefacing it with "The British press is reporting," and they just looked at me like cows. So I said, "Don't you think it's kinda strange that they just all of a sudden found Saddam all woozy and hiding in a hole?" More cow looks. So I changed the subject.

What's disturbing about this is the majority of people I work with are proper Bush-hating liberals, though I don't know about these three ladies.

I haven't bothered to tell my mom, but I imagine I'd get the exact same reaction you did.

I wrote a public forum and said something about Bush's grandfather supporting Hitler through money and one of my close friends' husbands said I'm "one of those people who get all their information off the internet" and was laughed away.....it makes me very mad.

8. My family thinks I am...

of course they could be right...however, my politics is right on. They are just brainwashed into submission with the focus of materialism and lies on the boob tube. We've had it too good for too long, and now they are bringing home to us what our government has been doing to other countries around the world. And the media...how does Greg palast say it...silence of the media lambs, they are all part of the whole military-industrial-congress-media complex now.

9. I had a very similar experience

I was visiting my parents who either have Faux New or Court Tv on at all times. We get into political arguments, at times, and hoped it wouldn't happen again anytime soon.

When we were in the kitchen getting our salami sandwiches, Dad said something about our "wonderful president" and how we were going to topple Muslim states one-by-one. I started to scream. LOUDLY. I turned on him to say I was leaving and would not be coming here for Christmas. I slammed the door on the way out.

I know that I probably over-reacted, but that's what I did. I had a nice Christmas spent with friends instead.
