What is with all this horsepower and speed everywhere?
Edited on Thu Dec-25-03 08:30 PM by HEyHEY
I come up to this cabin in summer....people ripping around on dirt bikes and the like...so I come here in winter...snowmobiles everywhere. When I'm on lakes, all people talk about is how they want a boat with all this horsepower.

What is with people? DOn't they realize that all they're doing with their lives is "going fast?" Seriously, that's the plan for all recreation...."go fast on a different surface" jeez man.

I'll stick to sailin', and flyfishing. Take it easy man, if I wanna go fast I'll get in a car.

5. Jackasses
I was talking to a 24 year old guy the other day, and all he had to talk about was how his Subaru could do 120, how his father has a truck that can do 160, and how he wants to buy a WRX. I wanted to say to him, "Oh yeah? And how often does your dad get his truck up to 160?" This young idiot didn't have a clue about anything. It's enough to make me really look forward to the day a gallon of gas costs 5 bucks. I bet it'll make these jerks feel really great, knowing that their trucks can go 160 (yeah, RIGHT) but they just can't get the thing to start, and they couldn't afford to take it on a 200 mile trip even if it did.
As a matter of fact, this whole thing reminds of a moron I knew back when I was a teenager who claimed to be getting 600 horsepower out of his Mercury Bobcat.
Man, I just can't wait for these fools to get their comeuppance.

8. As a former gearhead..
I have to say that a high powered vehicle is about as big of a rush as you can have with your pants on. It doesn't mean that 24/7/365 you need to be out on the road doing 120 or whatever. It's a hobby just like anything else. I got very tired of being lumped in with the "small penis" crowd. I never spent a dime on how my car looked, it was all about performance. I never drove recklessly in heavy traffic, or in a residential neighborhood. I always found it amusing that people would give me a ton of shit for spending hundreds of dollars on my car every month, but they would blow that much or more "partying" at the gambling boat, or clubbing, or on drugs. At least i had something to show for my money. It's a free fucking country people, while i'm certainly not condoning a blown, nitrous injected 454 miata for a daily commute, there's nothing wrong with having it as a recreational vehicle, at least it serves a purpose-not like an SUV that will never see anything but concrete and mall parking lots for the duration of it's life.

9. Horsepower vs "Genuine Power"
Mechanical power is a substitute for the lack of genuine power many people feel they lack their own lives. Modern society places a lot of demands on average citizen which they powerless to change. They may feel powerless at work or in their personal relationships; in the face of big corporations and big government, but when they jump in a big honking SUV they can feel as tough as a "Mad Max" Road-warrior as they commute 4 blocks from home to office and back.
