Final Update: I think I can call this "closure," or at least close enough:
I got out of dinner, instead I met the ex in front of the library.

I'll skip the absurd, insane details ("I'm really in love with the new guy, we're buying a zillion-dollar house outside town, I'll be pregnant in six months, etc.") and get to the nitty-gritty.

I've got a check from her.

It's only slightly less than what I asked for.

It's post-dated, which my attorney buddy says doesn't matter.

I kept it cool, and she was a spaz.

And I'm freeeeee.... :D

Better yet, followed the whole thing up with a touch-football game in the park with a bunch of other 30-something, huffing and puffing guys, a few beers after, and got invited to a much better class of Halloween party than I would've otherwise attended.

Even better than that, my attorney buddy dug into his car after the game and gave me a bottle of port.

Life is just fine. :)

Thanks mon frere, I appreciate it. Does the "high road" mean I can't just cash the check as soon as she's out of town, or should I wait?

18. Yes, just cash the check. Moral superiority doesn't mean you should
be dumb. Hie thee to the bank, and waste no time in doing so.

I appreciated your comment in my other thread, by the way. I did.

19. Consider myself hied
She actually just called with a bunch of nonsense about trying to rationalize her behavior. It's amazing, isn't it -- how when one behaves poorly there always seem to be a bevy of external influences to blame, rather than oneself?

Only you can make you happy. Depending upon someone else for that is folly; enjoying someone is another matter, but as we used to say in the waiter industry: "only you can have a bad night."

Cheers, Redstone.

12. Gone and forgotten?
I remember that feeling of finally being free of someone that had dragged me thru the dirt. Unfortunately I never stopped to figure out why I let them. Distrust is very comfortable and hard to lose. It seeps and crawls into every succeeding relationship. I hope better for you.

16. Thank you but don't be sad for me.
Distrust is easy. Trust is hard. I haven't tried to do the work. Helplessness is sad. I have no sympathy for myself.

25. ...says hmmm.

"I got out of dinner, instead I met the ex in front of the library."

Good job. Now you know that makes me happy.

"I'll skip the absurd, insane details ("I'm really in love with the new guy, we're buying a zillion-dollar house outside town, I'll be pregnant in six months, etc.") and get to the nitty-gritty. "

She used the opportunity of having you as a captive audience to gleefully rub your nose in her lying, cheating, manipulative assholery? Total F'ing Bitch. Zero class. Zero.

"I've got a check from her."

Yeah, but you can't cash it, can you?

"It's only slightly less than what I asked for."

How much is "slightly less"? And why is it "slightly less" at all?

"It's post-dated, which my attorney buddy says doesn't matter."

When is the date? After she's already fled the country and will be gone for a month? Sorry, I don't trust her. Not at all. When are you going to cash the check? Let me know when it clears. Please.

"I kept it cool, and she was a spaz."

Good.

"Better yet, followed the whole thing up with a touch-football game in the park with a bunch of other 30-something, huffing and puffing guys, a few beers after, and got invited to a much better class of Halloween party than I would've otherwise attended."

Yeah, that's cool. Have a blast, you more than deserve it. And pick up a fake witch this time. Oh, was that rude? I'm sorry.

"Even better than that, my attorney buddy dug into his car after the game and gave me a bottle of port."

Bet it's gone already! ;)

Take care Robb.

Yeah, she's gonna make one hell of a wife. And god help the asshat who thinks he can move to a town this small and not be "that Argentinian guy that (the ex) slept with and left Robb for." :D

Yeah, but you can't cash it, can you?

Actually, in this state I could. The only time I couldn't is if she filed notice with her bank that she was writing a post-dated check, and frankly that kind of togetherness is a little out of character.

How much is "slightly less"? And why is it "slightly less" at all?

Because I aimed high. :D I'm satisfied.

Thanks for everything.

Edited on Mon Oct-23-06 11:22 AM by lizziegrace
if she presents a check for payment of a debt and does so knowing there is no money available, she's setting herself up for a felony charge. Be sure you follow through on that one. I can't remember if the threshold for felony is $100 or $500 ...

27. Wonderful news.
Now you can relax, put it all behind you and move on with your life.

It's obviously been a stressful time, and that isn't going to end in a mere moment; but it's going to get better from here on in.

You've approached this all in the best possible way, you've come out at the other end with all you wanted and with your honour not merely intact but enhanced.

:yourock:

and I hope the check doesn't bounce, but best of all she is out of your life, the most important thing. Also I am glad you took the high road.

Don't be surprised if she re-surfaces in a few months when her new relationship bombs out. Just remember, done is done. Congratulations!

36. Thanks for the kick!
Glad to hear how things worked out. It sounds healthy on your end. The only time in recent memory I received a dubious check, I took it to the acct holder's bank to cash it, to avoid any possibility that it would bounce.

Isn't it eye opening to see that sort of acting out, up close? Perhaps someday she'll become more grounded, but at someone else's expense.

Here's to you.
