I have given up on finding a pencil skirt. I'm just gonna sew one.
I couldn't find one that I liked in the stores that was within my price range, so I bought a pattern and some fabric and I'm going to whip out the machine and make one my damn self. I haven't sewn anything for myself in a number of years, so I'm sure the process will involve me cursing like a sailor, as my Dad always did when he was using power tools. Any other sewers around here? What kind of things do you make? My sewing exploits the last five-ish years have pretty much been confined to Halloween costumes for the kids.

1. I used to make baby clothes...limiting myself to shiftlike dresses for
my baby girl...but that was long ago. Did you try New York and Co.? I was just checking out a really nice lined slim skirt there the other night. Buy one get one even! :hi:

18. We don't have a NY & co. around here, anymore.
That was a great store for classy, basic, good quality pieces.

14. Oh, houndstooth! That would be cute!
I bought some black stretch microsuede for my initial effort, but I figured if the pattern works well, I could easily duplicate it in different fabrics and lengths.

3. It's a good skill to have. If I had the time and the coordination
I wouldn't mind re-learning how to sew. I used to know the basics pretty well.

16. It's a straight, fairly close-to-the-body fitting skirt.
Often slightly above or below the knee. Works fabulously well with knee boots.:bounce:

6. I used to sew, but it's been a lot of years.
I mainly made clothes for myself. The problem I'd have would be with the zipper. I always had trouble with those, and sometimes sleeves, but that's not a problem with a skirt.:D

Do you ever look at Spiegel? I've found some nice things there and they often have good sales...:-)

7. this year's fashioned SUCKED!
I like a nice A-line skirt. The only ones I could find this past summer where black or brown (IN THE SUMMER).

The stores were full of prairie skirts (and let me tell you, whoever brought THAT ONE back should be killed slowly and painfully) and skirts that were not prairie skirts were either black/brown, or had pleats that started right at the widest possible point of a woman's body ("hey everybody--here comes MissMillie's hips!!!!")

I did find one jean skirt, but of course the butt area had been washed out lighter than the rest of the skirt.

I'm asking Santa for a sewing machine. I'm tired of being at the mercy of store buyers who think that everyone is a size 4, or 16 years old.

8. If you want to take a chance on mail order....
...I just bought a couple from Newport News. They fit great, look great, and were very inexpensive.

10. The pattern just calls for a lining of interfacing.
Nothing too fancy.
