2. They deep fry in Rome all the time
I love sweet potato fried in olive oil. The smoke point is fairly low so temperature control is key.

smoke point than virgin. But to deep fry I would go with peanut oil. Besides, olive oil is pricer so deep frying with it could get expensive.

8. It's acutally not too bad when you buy it by the gallon. It's still 2x
more, but overall pretty reasonable.

9. you can fry in olive oil..just not the extra virgin one
and it can be tricky

use safflower..which is healthy and is less troublesome to fry in

11. It's too expensive to use for deep frying
Mix some olive oil with your regular frying oil. This gives you a nice olivey flavor, but higher smoke tolerance and lower expense.

13. Too expensive and the flavor is a too heavy
I do not endorse deep frying anything in olive oil. First of all the good olive oils are too expensive to use for deep frying. Second, as many say, smoke tolerance is too low. Third, the olive oil flavor is too heavy IMHO.
It's great for saute, salad dressings, dipping, marinades, sauces, add infinitum. But deep frying?
If you want to deep fry go with peanut oil(careful of allergies), canola oil, vegetable shortening, and I have seen some recommend grape seed oil for deep frying. They recommend it because it has nearly no flavor. I have seen it in the stores but it is not cheap so those who do use it will reuse it a number of times over if they are deep frying in it on a small scale.
