Feeding time at my "zoo" *pics* (Possible gross-out warning)
Pardon the dirty glass in the first two pictures.

"Are those crickets? I think she has crickets!"

"Yes! That's the cricket bag!"

"Mmmm...waxworms!"

":9"

And this is an old one...

"Do you like my new hat?"

1. Great pics haruka
I could have done without the worms but at least it wasn't my hand they were wiggling on.

2. It's weird. Bugs really freak me out, normally.
Unless they're bugs I'm feeding to my lizards, I'm a huge baby about them.

If I'm feeding them to the lizards, I'm just completely detached from their bugness or something. Waxworms and crickets are really easy to deal with. Superworms freak me out because they bite. I use tongs to feed those. Normally, I don't feed them by hand at all, but it makes a better picture that way.

4. Icky
I killed a centipede this morning and I was squealing like crazy, I didn't even have to touch it.

Cool lizard though. My 9 year old wants a lizard or a snake, I'm not too sure about it yet...

5. I really recommend a leopard gecko (what you see in the top pictures).
I like snakes too, but at his age, he's better off with a lizard.

Leopard geckos are very calm as adults (my adults will sit on my shoulder for hours) and on the extremely rare occaision they do bite, it doesn't hurt at all or break the skin. The fact that they're really easy to handle is what you need for a kid.

They're pretty small (8-10" full-grown), very hardy and they do well with a base diet of crickets, which is the least "gross" insect to handle.

Here's the three of them checking out DU:

This site has a lot of good info on them...

6. Thanks for the info
My main concern is who would end up feeding them, ewww, I'm such a girly-girl.
I will look into though, he would love it.

8. I'm just feeding them by hand for the picture.
Normally, I just buy a bag of crickets at the pet shop, open the bag, drog in some vitamin powder, twist the bag shut, "shake & bake" the crickets, and dump the bag in the tank, without ever actually touching a bug.

It's baby lizard time around here and I've rescued a few already.

9. Well, the only interest the cats show in their tanks is they like to lay
on top against the heat lamps. I'm sure if they were all out together unsupervised, there would be issues, but the only time they're out is with me right there (and definitely not in front of the cat that's into hunting).

11. Leopard gecko; I have three of those.
Actually, the second picture isn't an iguana. It's a bearded dragon.

Here's a better picture of them (brother & sister):

12. My bad. Thanks for the correction. They're cute.
Some people might not think so, but I watch an awful lot of Animal Planet.
I really like that leopard gecko. Are they hard to care for?

13. Nah, they're probably like the easiest lizard.
Gentle, friendly, etc.

I posted more info about them above in post #5 to DivaMeow. They come in all sorts of colors, too. Price varies according to price. A baby with "normal" coloration is around $20.

21. He's mean though.
My girlfriend (who is his owner) says he was socialized poorly when she adopted him. :(

23. Male iguanas are also more aggressive than the females.
My cousin has a really mean one. They found it at a construction site in NJ and took it home.

My male bearded dragon is really mean and he was socialized. He was an asshole as a baby and he never outgrew it with handling. I can get him to calm down outside of his tank, but he'll bite when I go into the tank, even going so far as to attack me or the cats through the glass.

24. Well Angelo (that's his name) doesn't have a tail thanks to
his aggressiveness. Evidently, he pulled out a toe-nail and almost bled to death, they had to amputate his tail as a result due to no blood circulation, now he just has a big stump.

I guess he likes to attack the cage in his attempts to get at people and often makes himself bleed.

22. Okay...
the one in the top two pictures is Spot (I adopted him with that name), below that is Stumpy, one of his mates. Shown elsewhere in the thread is Spot's other mate, Killer (the one who gave Stumpy her name when they were babies).

The bearded dragon is Raoul Duke and there's a picture of her and her brother, Dr. Gonzo, together further upthread. They actually live seperately though because they hate each other.
