Do you suffer from liberal guilt?
Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 04:47 PM by LynzM
You know, the never-ending feeling that you could be doing more, or better, to help the world, the environment, your causes, whatever? I'm not Catholic, and good thing, because the guilt would eat me alive. Finally switched to fair-trade coffee this week... one less thing on the guilt list. *sigh* You?

1. A little
I give way too much of my disposable income to Anheuser Busch and Reynolds Tobacco, which I realize are not very progressive companies and are sapping me of the strength that I could spend fighting the power

8. Mmm....
I don't suffer from those two vices, but I love some Dunkin' Donuts iced coffee, especially in the summer...

2. You mean fair-trade coffee, right?
Or are you talking liberal market guilt, in which case free-trade coffee would make sense.

4. Guilt is unproductive, useless and harmful
Never feel guilt. Never look back except to reassess your plans.

That is, it is good to learn from your mistakes, but a bad idea to brood about your mistakes. You made the best decision at the time with the resources on hand.

6. I wish that I could embrace that wholeheartedly...
It seems to be something I'm not very good at. Maybe in this instance, it's not so much guilt, but the nagging feeling that I could do more? I'm not sure that's really the same thing. Hrm.

10. If you crave the need to do more, then do more
If you don't have the resources to do so, then accept that fact.

Guilt will just make you feel bad.

I mean, I drive an SUV, an ATV and boats. I smoke. I watch ABC. And I even drank a can of Coors today. I didn't pay for that though. It was just left over from my stepdad's tailgate party. Oh and I like to shoot guns.

7. Shooting guns is fun.
As long as I don't have to shoot them at people, or animals, thanks. Well, I'd shoot animals if I needed to to survive, but... that's a whole 'nother discussion. (Flame war, anyone?)

Can you teach me some of this Church of the Guilt-Free? :)

13. Yeah, I just like shooting targets.
Ugh...gun flame wars. I was in an absurd one the other day. Then, I was stalked into the stun gun thread, where a joking comment I made was turned into me wanting to go around tazering people for no reason pretty much.

22. Was that the pee-wee football game thread
where the sheriff's deputy tazered an out-of-control parent?

Some of the people in that thread were , man.

25. Yep, and actually, if you want to be technical about it...
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 12:47 AM by haruka3_2000
he didn't tazer an out-of-control parent. He hit the man with a stun gun. There's a difference. A stun gun has to be applied directly to the person's body. That was probably the safest way to subdue the guy. A tazer actually shoots out electric barbs up to 15', so there is a chance of hitting someone else with a tazer.

Yeah, the poster that didn't get my joke, also had problems with me in a gun thread the previous day.

Totally .

Honestly, my parents wouldn't have freaked out, if someone was hit with a stun gun, within my view, as a kid. I grew up in a rough neighborhood. I saw far worse as a child and I feel I'm none the worse for wear.

In a few billion years, the sun will grow into a red giant star, and devour the Earth in its path. In the face of this, worrying about doing everything just right is a waste of the few seconds we have. :P

14. Hehe
;-)

Just try for something attainable and realistic: If your score sheet at the end of your life has you favoring doing good and right over that of doing evil and wrong, you can absolve yourself of all guilt.

Now go, my child, and be free! :D

24. Sometimes being pissed off about something
is more productive than guilt. It's scarier to those around you, though. Guilt only makes You feel bad and what does that accomplish?

And somehow I don't see you as being ineffectual...

19. Everytime I forget to take my previously used plastic bags to the grocery
store; every time I have to throw away a ziplock bag; every time I buy something that's packaged with far too much shit; every time I use a piece of styrofoam; or the times that I am forced to use a straw (like for the chocolate shake I treated myself to from McDonald's today) or given a straw for no reason and I know that it now has to be thrown away because it's been given to me.

Yes, the guilt is high.

21. I'm pretty liberal with my guilt
but I don't feel guilty about being liberal or not doing enough. I live my life and I do what I can and that's all I Can do and I've got enough other things to feel guilty about.

32. Yes I do
I have a house cleaner, and I pay her more than anyone else I know pays their house cleaner, but it's still less than she deserves. And there's the fact that she gets to see her children once every couple of years, like lots of the Sri Lankan maids. I live in a country where I see how lucky I am to have been born relatively well off, with more opportunities than many have, and I try not to feel guilty. I can't quite manage it, at all. I've heard people make fun of liberal guilt, but if it spurs you to do what you can to make things better, well, it's not that bad a thing.
