What do you consider to be barbaric?
Edited on Tue Dec-23-03 04:13 PM by Bertha Venation
The recent thread on declawing cats, and today's clusterf*** in Chesapeake, VA w/ the Malvo sentencing, have made me wonder what others consider to be barbaric.

I find declawing cats and capital punishment barbaric. Possibly more, given time to think about it....

Do you consider any part of life in the U.S. barbaric?

4. With Capital Punishment, The Punishment Ends Early
Edited on Tue Dec-23-03 04:28 PM by arwalden
and the executed person ceases to care one way or the other. They are dead. Punishment over.

Whereas...

The LIFE SENTENCE punishment goes on and on and on and on and on.

Meanwhile... some poor slob in the cell next to John Mohammad will continue to serve out a 20 years sentence for being caught with crack as a "third-strike".

Don't these juries, and lawyers, and judges get it?

5. Lack of Universal Health care
Here, if you get sick, you go to the doctor. If you get really sick, you go to the hospital.

Total cost:

$5.00 / day cable TV.

If you don't have Blue Cross you have to pay user fees for crutches and whatnot but it's affordable. If you don't have Blue Cross, they charge extra for semi-private or private, but they don't have huge wards in the hospitals here. I can cope with 4 to a room.

that can be cured with the right medical care. It happens all the time.

6. I'll agree with the death penalty. Barbaric beyond words.
We, as Americans, should be better than that.

Of course, having a President who gets a gleam in his eye talking about capital punishment is even more hard to take.

I don't know if it's barbaric...but our treatment of Native Americans has been and is shameful.

16. Probably, but...
what about taking some of these "big game" hunters and giving them a big knife and a free ride to bear country.

Stick a few salmon in their pockets for lunch, and we'll see who the "real men" are.

BTW, seems I was reading not too long ago about a big fight in NY over canned hunts. Some people are trying to make them illegal there, but are losing the battle.

Big business upstate.

And it is all for rich clients who pay thousands to play the great white hunter and kill an exotic animal.

17. Lots of things
1. Death penalty
2. Especially the death penalty or life without parole for juvenile offenders (Putting Kip Kinkel--the Springfield, Oregon shooter-- away for life without parole at age 15 is barbaric. I never saw a clearer case of severe depression than I saw in the documentary about him.)
3. Cutting budgets in ways that deny severely disabled people the meds and care they need
4. People working full time and not having enough to live on
5. Invading countries that haven't attacked us
6. Spending more on the military than all the other major countries combined but claiming to be "unable to afford" national health care, affordable housing, public transit, and high-quality education
7. Cutting arts and humanities out of school curricula while saving sports
8. Equating patriotism with militarism
9. The fact that there are hundreds of thousands of people living on the streets and the Republicans tell us that that they're all drug addicts anyway.

Basically, all that tough guy macho bullshit.

26. There was a story a while back that annoyed the shit out of me
about a disabled child that was chained to her bed and the house burned down and she could not escape because she was chained by her ankles to the fucking bed.

I was OUTRAGED, not only for the tragedy of this senseless loss of life, but for the idea of chaining any human being to a bed, child, adult, or animal. I would not do that to a goddamned fucking dog.

Chaining a HUMAN BEING is barbaric. I don't care what it is to or why. This is NOT how to treat a HUMAN BEING, no matter their station in life.

To add insult to injury, it was suggested in that same thread that parents of such disabled children are MORE prone to be ..how do I put this ... BELOW average intelligence or otherwise incapable people that don't know any better.

Boy, does THAT piss me off.

There is NO excuse for abuse. None. Nada. Nix. No. Never.

35. Everything is barbaric to someone
My mom thinks ear piercing is barbaric. I think what they have to do to her to draw blood for a blood test (the veins in her elbow are impossible to use, so they have to take it from the wrist) borders on the barbaric.

Veal is barbaric. So is lamb. I think ground meat is a bit on the barbaric side, but a little barbarism never hurt anyone. (Not a veal fan, last time I had lamb was 1982, but there's fifty pounds of ground beef in the freezer.)

Cropping Dobermans' ears and tail docking is barbaric.

Fundamentalist religions. Well-done steak. TV talk shows. Sports like cockfighting and dogfighting (boxing is the only blood sport I don't mind). By and large, America (or, perhaps I should say AMERICANS) are NOT very civilisationally and culturally advanced.
