Do you separate your laundry?

I'm doing laundry so of course I must start a poll about it.

1. No...I put the whites in with the colors.

I don't own a lot of bright colored clothes that could wreak havoc with white colors, so I don't bother separating them.

2. I fling them all together

because I know all my things have been washed so many times they can't run any more...

...EXCEPT my new cargo pants, which will stain anything light an ugly pale green colour. x(

3. I can't believe I'm answering this poll.

Well, laundry's a big part of my life, so...

- Kids all gets washed together in warm water, separated by kid.

- My whites (hot water), colors (warm water), and blacks (cold water).

- Husband does his own damn laundry!

- linens get their loads, too, in hot.

There came a time when I wouldn't let my Mom do my laundry when I visited home anymore. She always let them sit in the drier for hours to wrinkle, hung them funny so they got contorted, and never bothered to check for drying instructions. I guess I'm slightly picky about laundry.

she was always that way about laundry. I just never cared until I left home and started buying clothes that didn't all have the exact same washing instructions like she does.

You tease me about how I do the laundry, you risk bodily harm.

Just sit there and appreciate the fact that your laundry, done to perfection, appears as if by magic neatly folded in your drawers or hanging in your closet, and that your nice classic dress clothes are cared for properly to last a long, long time and all your old favorites go for years without getting frayed at the edges or having the material pill up. You will also notice that I work my laundry magic while using the minimum amount of hot water necessary and achieve professional results while utilizing all environmentally responsible, cruelty-free laundering products.

14. Yes. I never wash them in the dishwasher, nor vise versa. You see,

the cultural differences are too great; they wind up fighting, then one group - usually the clothing - starts to demand civil rights legislation . . . . it's just not worth it.

I almost put as a choice, "No, what do you think I am? A segregationist?" but so often people don't get my rather obscure sense of humor so I decided to leave it out. Nice to know I'm not alone. ;)

jeans separate from everything else. the same with dark colors (black) they get their own load too, separate from the other colors.

Delicates, nondelicates, whites, darks, other colors, sheets, towels, blankets... They all have their own groups. :P I have them preprogrammed on our washer in case my husband forgets what's what. I'm the one usually doing the laundry, though, and I prefer it that way. :)

28. i love to do laundry.

and i separate everything -- white from darks -- i separate according to fabric.

some things are cold water - some warm - and others hot.

all are rinsed in cold water.

i don't wash linen with cottons -- i wash those by them selves -- i have clothes that i really want dried outside -- like hoodies and sheets.

i even start the water first and disolve the detergent first to make sure every thing is disolved and doesn't get on the clothes.

I separate -

SO's grubby, disgusting work clothes in one load.

My work clothes.

Our everyday clothes excluding sweats (primarily shirts and socks, as well as lightly soiled jeans).

Sweats.

Linens.

Towels.

I usually wash towels together and jeans together, but otherwise it's just a loose grouping by color.

Some clothes can go in two or more of those categories.
My husband will not do the laundry because I have gotten upset when he doesn't separate the laundry. It is not that hard and sometimes not separating clothes can cause them to get ruined.

I put laundry into these groups:

blacks (the majority of my wardrobe) and reds, pinks, purples - unless I have enough blacks for a whole load or more

whites

jeans, tough materials

towels

bedclothes

everything else

37. I used to, then one day...

My oldest daughter threw everything in together, and voila! It all came out okay.

And then she did it again. And it all came out okay.

Since then, I don't separate. I throw EVERYTHING in together, and it all comes out okay - bras, jeans, sheets, delicate peignoirs, barn towels, the duvet....

The short lesson: don't sweat the small stuff. It all comes out okay in the wash.

38. I kinda like doing laundry.

Given that I hate all other housework, laundry doesn't bother me. I separate by:

Stuff that can be washed in hot water (usually whites)
Stuff that can be washed in warm water (usually pale or bright colors)
Stuff that can be washed in cold water (usually dark colors and jeans)

Then puppy towels/blankets have a category all their own.

I do have a bad habit of overstuffing the washer when trying to wash a whole category at once, but it's always worked out so far.

Whenever possible I then hang everything out to air dry. I guess it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and subversive in that I'm not using my dryer and enriching the electric company. ;)

39. I just separate lights from darks--

I think most of the darks (pants, sweats, jeans) seem to be more heavier clothing than the lights (bras, underpants, socks, linens) anyway. But everything is getting washed in cold water--I don't know that there is any advantage in using warm for anything, I haven't found one, so I just don't. And generally, I just use whatever the medium cycle is for laundering and for drying. There are only two of us in the household, so laundry is a once-a-week event, and I'm not drawing it out any more than I have to. I bought an iron, but I don't seem to have an ironing board (there's a confession.) And in my youth, I used to employ the "scratch and sniff test"--if it doesn't make me scratch, and stands up to a sniff, it can be worn again. (There's another.)

42. Warm seems to be better for heavily soiled items

That is something I've noticed. If I have some caked up clothing, I usually wash it warm, provided it is a fabric that can handle warm water, because it seems more likely to get clean than with cold water. For normal wear, I use cold.

But that was back when most of my clothes were all dark. As a traveller, dark clothes didn't show the dirt as easliy. Then I gradually stared wearing more whites. After they turned pink and blue, it was time to spend extra quarters for a seperate machine.
