It's 58 degrees in my house. I don't want to , but I have to
turn on the oil furnace. :(

I wonder what heating oil costs per gallon *this* heating season? Sigh...

Edited on Sat Sep-30-06 08:23 AM by YellowRubberDuckie
And cover up...58 is not that cold.
You don't need to turn on the furnace yet...And wouldn't it be cheaper in the longrun just to get central heat and air?

2. Unfortunately (and fortunately) I'm renting
Oil heat puts out more BTU's than gas. Over a heating season, I actually pay less to heat this house than I paid heating a townhouse with natural gas. But, I have to buy it in 150 gallon fills.

The heat and air are both central and the owner put in new windows. It will barely hit 60 today with no sun. I'll let it run a cycle to take the chill off.

And it's economically efficient. And her house isn't insulated for shit.

4. We've pulled out the electric heaters for space warming
to take the edge off, the big comforters went on the beds last night.(along with the dog)and all the warm fuzzy throws for the living area were pulled out. I'm trying to hold off starting the boiler until we absolutely have too.

I don't know about heating oil costs..I read recently that nat. gas is supposed to be lower this year.

5. I just read a report
you're right. Natural gas is trading much lower. I wonder how much savings you'll see on your bill.

I've got a space heater (radiator type) in my room and a fan heater in the living room. It helps. :)

8. Of course it's much lower this year.
My FIL has passed away so the incredibly high bills from last year to keep the house warm and keep him warm with the gas logs won't be present. :eyes:

Couldn't have been cheaper last year, could it? That would have saved me a fortune.

9. Our budget dropped $40 a month this season.
I like those radiator heaters..we have a couple for the kid's bedrooms. These old farmhouses were built so strange around here..there is only one boiler radiator on the 2nd floor..in the hallway.

I hope fuel oil prices are down too. I'm so tired of seeing people get ripped off for necessities.

My budget for a two story townhouse was $175/month last year and I turned it down to 55 during the day when I was at work and only up to about 63 when I was home.

16. Yep, Columbia gas
We keep ours at a pretty steady 65. We did a lot of winterizing last year..re-caulking and re-glazing windows and for the first time used that plastic window shrink stuff even though we have good storm windows. I don't know how much winterizing contributed to the lower budget this year or if it's because of gas costs. I'll have to get out prior years bills and compare gas usuage.

Edited on Sat Sep-30-06 08:48 AM by calico1
Put on some extra layers. Put on socks because you lose a lot of body heat via extremities.

We have old windows here. Last year I got a few rolls of clay caulking and sealed the edges of the windows. It worked very well and was cheap. Too early yet to do that but if you have drafty windows it's something to keep in mind for when it gets colder. We used much less oil last year because the house wasn't so drafty.

17. Buy a computer.
Seriously. With the cooling fans set to maximum, the PC pushes out lots of hot air. (the PC's temp remains at 100 deg F, and ambient room temperature is 75 F. Outside temp is 49.8 F.)

And that's cooler than my previous computer, which under the same conditions had my room warmed up to 80. Toasty!

87. I moved it upstairs to my room
Edited on Sat Sep-30-06 03:26 PM by lizziegrace
took the bookcase out that was under the window. It's now on the sunporch.

Widget came upstairs when it was over (very tentatively...) and jumped up on the bed to watch. :(

90. I took the three drawers out first

And there are no gouges in the walls going up the stairs. But that turn at the top of the stairs is wicked. No wonder the movers complained about it. :(
