Favorite Cold Lines In Songs, Ladies And Gentlemen?
Listening to one of my daughter's tapes, the Breeders, she tells me the group is, a marvelous line slashed out of it:

"If you're so special, why aren't you dead?"

It will strick with such other favorites as, "I think I like it fine...so far..." and "If you don't start drinking, I'm gonna leave," in the permanent repertory.

Anyone else have favorites in a similar vein?

"Cool blue reason comes into your world...."

2. If I'm understanding you correctly, Sir, this bit
from Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" strikes me as pretty darn cold:

Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

3. if you mean cold in the sense of cruel
some lines from an Ani Difranco song come to mind, which I can't remember the name of but I will as soon as I post this:

"I still think of you as my boyfriend
I don't think it's the end of the world
so why don't you follow my example
and go find yourself a really nice girl"

another one is from "Dilate" where she and the guy are both cheating on their lovers,
and she is trying to convince herself to stop what she is doing (at that exact moment) because it's wrong and she says:

"I should just shut my mouth
and rethink a minute
but I can't shut it now 'cause
there's something in it."

16. yeah it's a great song
I think, like others have said, that some of her best work is on that CD and maybe since she's been around the bed married/divorced what have you she'll come to peace with those songs.

I really love "Little Plastic Castle" too, because some of those songs are just so personal. Gravel is so much the narration of my last relationship:

You were never a good lay
and you were never a good friend

and

you were never very kind and
you let me way down every time
but oh what can I say, I adore you...

arrgghhh, it's still true, I still adore her, and probably always will. And what to I get for it? Stupid spam e-mails once a month...

'cause once she got married I just quit trying to keep up with her...after reveling reckoning. I don't know if she changed or I did. Well, I know I did. I don't keep up with stuff good anymore anyway. These last three years have been a complete wash, I've missed just about every single thing thats' happened. I've been gone as much as if I'd been high the whole time.

She's a witness to her own glory
She's a never-ending story
She's a frolicking depression
She's a self-inflicted obsession

She's playing' footsie in another dimension
She's a goddess milking her time

21. One Of My Favorite Songs, Ever
Edited on Sat Sep-30-06 02:17 AM by REP
It so perfectly describes a certain sort of person. Goes well with another snarky song:

Bohemian Like You

You got a great car
Yeah what's wrong with it today
I used to have one too
Maybe I'll come and have a look
I really love your hairdo yeah
I'm glad you like mine too
See we're looking pretty cool
Will get ya

So what do you do?
Oh yeah I wait tables too
No I havent heard your band
'Cos you guys are pretty new
But if you dig on vegan food
Well, come over to my work
I'll have 'em cook you something
That you'll really love

'Cos I like you
Yeah I like you
And I'm feeling so bohemian like you
Yeah I like you
Yeah I like you
And I feel - whoa

Wait
Who's that guy just hangin' at your pad
He's lookin' kinda bummed
You broke up that's too bad
I guess it's fair if he always pays the rent
And he doesn't get bent about
Sleeping on the couch when I'm there

- Bohemian Like You, The Dandy Warhols
(yes, I'm perhaps the world's oldest Dandy Warhols fan)

27. Another Two You Might Like:
Hey.
There's nothing in my art.
I'd rather be cool than be smart.
Hey.
What I'm thinking of.
I'd rather be cool than be loved.

Here's what I feel,
Ba ba ba ba.
Just want a girl
As cool as kim deal.

Hey.
I thought that you were tough.
Well I've had it too, had it rough.
Hey.
I don't care if I'm wrong,
'cause right always takes too long.

- Cool As Kim Deal, The Dandy Warhols

I am a sensitive artist...
I am a sensitive artist.
Nobody understands me because I am so deep.
In my work I make allusions to books that nobody else has read,
Music that nobody else has heard,
And art that nobody else has seen.
I can't help it
Because I am so much more intelligent
And well-rounded
Than everyone who surrounds me.
I stopped watching tv when I was six months old
Because it was so boring and stupid
And started reading books
And going to recitals
And art galleries.
I don't go to recitals anymore
Because my hearing is too sensitive
And I don't go to art galleries anymore
Because there are people there
And I can't deal with people
Because they don't understand me.
I stay home
Reading books that are beneath me,
And working on my work,
Which no one understands
I am sensitive...
I am a sensitive artist...

- Sensitive Artist, King Missile

For Steely Dan (or at least Walter) there's "Book of Liars" ("There's a star in the book of liars by your name...").
X's "Skin Deep Town" also qualifies in its entirety.
Green Day's "The Grouch": "The world's a bitch (or if we're believing popup- and malware-laden lyrics sites: The world owes me) so fuck you."
Of course, there's always "How Do You Sleep?"
Pretty much all of "She's Got Issues" by The Offspring.

50. Nick Cave's "Far From Me" just has one after another
For you dear, I was born
For you I was raised up
For you I've lived and for you I will die
For you I am dying now
You were my mad little lover
In a world where everybody fucks everybody else over
You who are so far from me
Far from me
So far from me
Way across some cold neurotic sea
Far from me

I would talk to you of all matter of things
With a smile you would reply
Then the sun would leave your pretty face
And you'd retreat from the front of your eyes
I keep hearing that you're doing your best
I hope your heart beats happy in your infant breast
You are so far from me
Far from me
Far from me

There is no knowledge but i know it
There's nothing to learn from that vacant voice
That sails to me across the line
From the ridiculous to the sublime
It's good to hear you're doing so well
But really can't you find somebody else that you can ring and tell
Did you ever
Care for me?
Were you ever
There for me?
So far from me

You told me you'd stick by me
Through the thick and through the thin
Those were your very words
My fair-weather friend
You were my brave-hearted lover
At the first taste of trouble you went running back to mother
So far from me
Far from me
Suspended in your bleak and fishless sea
Far from me
Far from me
