When's The Last Time Your Favorite Sports Team Won A Championship?
As a long-suffering Mets, Nets, Jets and Islanders fan, I can say that I've never seen any of my team's win a championship as long as I've followed them.

My Mets were the last team to win one - in 1986. I started watching baseball in 1987.

My Nets haven't won a championship since the ABA was around in the early 1970's - and I wasn't even born yet.

My Jets, I've been told, have won a championship back in 1968. But that's a whole decade and two presidents before I was born.

My Islanders kicked ass in the early 1980's - establishing probably the greatest hockey team of all-time. But since those four cups, they haven't done much.

So how about you. Are your rooting interests of choice doing as lousy as mine are?

1. Radio was invented; Cubs fans got to hear their team lose.

2. TV was invented; Cubs fans got to see their team lose.

3. Baseball added 14 teams; Cubs fans get to see and hear their team lose to more clubs.

4. George Burns celebrated his 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th, 90th and 100th birthdays.

5. Haley's comet passed Earth twice.

6. Harry Caray was born....and died. Incredible, but true.

7. The NBA, NHL and NFL were formed, and Chicago teams won championships in each league.

8. Man landed on the moon, as have several home runs given up by Cubs pitchers.

9. Sixteen U.S. presidents were elected.

10. There were 11 amendments added to the Constitution.
11. Prohibition was created and repealed.

12. The Titanic was built, set sail, sank, was discovered and became the subject of major motion pictures, the latest giving Cubs fans hope that something that finishes on the bottom can come out on top.

13. Wrigley Field was built and becomes the oldest park in the National League.

14. Flag poles were erected on Wrigley Field roof to hold all of the team's future World Series pennants. Those flag poles have since rusted and been taken down.

15. A combination of 40 Summer and Winter Olympics have been held.

3. Let's see...there's the little matter of LAST YEAR!
My Spurs won the NBA Championship in 1999 and 2003, ending YEARS of frustration.

My Cardinals last won the World Series in 1982, appearing in 1985 and 1987.

My Houston Oilers won the AFL Championship before I was born, but let's not talk about their rather spectacular playoff flame-outs, thieveries and poor performances. Then the asshole owner moves them to TENNESSEE and they damn-near win the Super Bowl. Of course Houston gets a new team, which is owned by a guy who has Poppy Bush in the owner's box every freaking week. :argh:

Don't even get me started on the St. Louis Blues...

Dallas is the first NFL franchise to win three out of four superbowls.
My daughter was exactly one week old on that fabled day.

Oh, and I guess 1999 Stanley Cup, even though I'm not the biggest hockey fan in the world.

12. January, 1997
The Packers won the Super Bowl behind Brett Favre and Reggie White.

Others...
NBA - 1986 Celtics
NHL - Um, never. They've only been around for five years. (Nashville)
MLB - 1988/1918 - I claim dual fanship with the Dodgers and Red Sox. (And no, I don't know for whom I would cheer if they meet in the World Series.)

My Braves (finally) won the World Series against the Indians.

In 1980 my Georgia Bulldogs won the NCAA Football Championship.

My Falcons? Went to the Super Bowl in '98. Lost. Haven't been back, but there's always next year! (Stay healthy Vick!)

I didn't start watching until 98.

My dad still has the Wheaties box from 1986, I think it was, when they won. (correct me if I'm wrong) It's on top of our cupboard.

24. Baseball - Not Good Football - Not Good B-Ball - Not Bad
Cubs - 1908. I know it's hard to believe, but i'm not that old.

Bears - 1985. With the turnover rate of team quality in the NFL, this is gettin' embarassing.

Bulls - Only a few years. They won 6 in 8 years, so that's pretty cool! But, the last 4 years have been painful.

Hawks - Nobody (and i mean NOBODY) cares about the Hawks anymore. When the Wirtz family finally sells the team, and Gary Bettman sheds hockey of the front office troglodytes, then we'll start caring about hockey again.

So, counting the Stanley cup in the mid 60's, and the Bears in 1963, i've been around for 9 champions. But, since 6 of 'em were the same team in the same decade, it's really pathetic.

Edited on Tue Dec-23-03 12:01 PM by ih8thegop
So far, they're 3-for-8 in Stanley Cups since I started following them.

My Pistons aren't all that bad, although their championships several years back (1990 or so) were before I started following them.

No comment on my Lions and Tigers.

34. 43 years and counting for the Eagles.......
One Super Bowl appearance in our history in 1981 but we have some hope this year. This regime and Quarterback will win a SB here within the next few years if we falter again this season. How we've overcome the devastating injuries on defense and ran off 9 straight wins before finally losing in OT to the Niners is amazing. This team has Philly heart and cannot be counted out.

Baseball - Philadelphia Phillies - 1980. I was 10 years old. I remember we all skipped school and went around throwing eggs into the crowd at the parade for some reason. A strange way to celebrate but it was fun.

Hockey - New York Islanders - 1983. Strange coming from a Philly guy but it's a personal issue within the family. Got to go to a lot of games as a kid because my father's connections. Front row seats throughout the Dynasty years. I got to sit with Rush band members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson at the 1981 Stanley Cup Finals against Minnesota. We were able to go on the ice and in the locker rooms and stuff after the games, met all the players. I still have sticks from Smith, Bossy, Trottier, Tonelli and Gillies. The team then went into a horrible slump after 1993 and only have just begun to recover and at least make the playoffs. They are a few players away from making a real run at the cup.
