If the machines do the steal, things are going to hit the wall.

5. Good morning
:hi:

Let's see, what did I do so far this morning. I uploaded our library software. It went OK. Then my co-worker started the program and the convertion started. Of course I was so "clever" to start the program as well, that means the convertion got stuck. Now I have to re-organize the databse. Which isn't the smallest one (about 940KB) so it takes a while.

So how are you doing?

64. And good morning (a bit late) to you all.
I say "a bit late" because I've been up for some time already ... Bebo insisted.

I still made him wait while I jumped up shivering to turn the AC OFF, refilled my essential oil diffuser and added the eucalyptus and pine needle oils, lit a couple of candles to increase the warmth of the room just a tad, checked the Weather Channel for the current temp (52F, with outlying areas in the 40's) and forecast, then watched a bit of an "Angel" rerun as I made my first cuppa cappu and sipped it down to warm up, checked the Greatest page to see what topics were being most discussed (and replied in one thread), and then got up to dress warmly for my morning tasks outside.

It's still totally dark here in OK, but I could already hear the familiar sounds of the freeway traffic picking up not far away, a couple of the early risers in this park starting their cars and slamming doors, and of course Bebo rattling his long tie-out chain a bit as he checked the immediate area for CATS to chase off.

No cats this morning -- now THAT's a surprise! As the nights get cooler, the semi-feral cats around here tend to seek out warm spots under my RV and in my flowerbeds where a veritable "forest" of canna lilies offers a lot of wind protection and good cover for them. Yesterday morning Bebo even discovered one cat asleep in HIS DOGHOUSE!

He didn't like that one bit -- and can ya blame him? He chased that one off pronto, and that was the first place he looked this morning. :D

So then I filled all five of my bird feeders with their favorite mix containing cracked corn, and took Bebo back off his chain and walked him on the long leash down past the new neighbor's place where his pair of chihuahuas have left a lot of their scent for the Beebster to investigate (and leave his mark behind, of course). ;) The sum total weight of all three of these dogs might be as much as 25 pounds! But of course it's all about the intimidation factor when each of these three males tries to mark the area the most.

Back inside to make my second cuppa cappu, snuggle back under the covers, and then, "a bit late," check in at the Lounge to see if anyone else is up and posting yet. So nice to see you all here. :hi:

I'm just happy that I don't have to even THINK about packing and unpacking anymore, even if I move, because all my belongings are inside this little old motorhome and all I have to do is secure a few items, start the motor, and drive away if I need to move! :bounce:

So you're coming to MO to live now, GoP? Did I get that right? Glad to have you for a (state) neighbor! Tulsa is in northeastern OK, not far at all from KS, AR, and MO. My favorite cousin lives in Columbia -- he's the morning guy for the NPR affiliate station at MU.

So where are you gonna be setting down your new roots?

89. Thanks! Your new home looks to be in a terrific place.
I knew that area had a fascinating history, but it was interesting to read more about it and learn just HOW historic it is. :)

I once lived in Leavenworth -- for three weeks, back in the early 80's. My second hubby and I hadn't planned for it to be such a temporary stop, but you know how life is: plans change, opportunities arise elsewhere, and we up and move again!

Never have forgotten those three weeks in Leavenworth, however. Who could? We lived there in August, I believe it was '82, and the only apartment we could find in a hurry after honeymooning along the way from Tulsa northward was in Leavenworth's DOWNTOWN area. Little walk-up apartment over the Pizza Twist, where the jukebox downstairs boomed away and vibrated our floors right up till midnite every night.

And it was sooo HOT that summer!!

That was before refrigerated air conditioning was the norm everywhere, remember. The high had reached 110F that day and the city streets and buildings were holding the heat well, with two-story buildings blocking any breeze that might have existed outside.

In order to try to get to sleep our first night, we were soon reduced to removing most sleepwear, throwing even the topsheet off, and I finally had to wet a washcloth and wipe my face and self with it just to try to bring down my core temp. (I always overheat easily anyway; been that way all my life, just like my mom ;))

I can laugh about the situation now that it's just a bad memory, but that level of heat was truly dangerous.

The entire front wall of the apartment facing the street was filled with tall windows -- the old kind that were intended to be very openable, except of course a few of them weren't because they were stuck or painted shut. But those were the ONLY windows in the entire flat, meaning there was NO cross-ventilation at all. Our little old landlady had at least brought us a 12-inch oscillating fan that first day, bless her heart.

It was humid, too, though, and putting that one little fan in a window just didn't do much to relieve the misery of that sweltering heat. <fanning myself just thinking of it>

So we moved ourselves out of the back bedroom, pulled down the old-fashioned Murphy bed from its nook in the wall, and tried to benefit from the slight hint of a breeze the fan stirred up in the living room.

Just as we were almost getting to sleep after the jukebox's bass rattles ceased and all was quiet, Gary and I discovered slowly that we were being eaten alive by BEDBUGS!!!!!!!

I kid you not -- actual, thriving, and very real, live, squirming, biting bedbugs!

I have no idea how long they may have been "growing their economy" in their colony there in the Murphy bed, since it's quite possible it hadn't been used much by previous tenants. Our sweet little old landlady may well have had the place fumigated before we moved in, since it's logical to guess that the poison wouldn't have reached those bedbugs even if she had done that.

IT. WAS. MISERABLE!

Once we figured out what it was that was burrowing under our skin and devouring our bodies, making us scratch and claw at ourselves in desperation, we knew there would be NO SLEEPING that night.

Poor Gary still had to go to work the next morning, his first day on the new job that had brought us to Leavenworth in the first place. He had to leave early, drive to Kansas City -- the MO side -- find his new employer's main office to check in, and then find the construction site where he was to be the new supervising Civil Engineer.

I have no idea how he managed to survive that day -- out in the blast-furnace-like heat on a construction site where he had to wear protective gear to do his job!

I know it was one of the most painfully insufferable days of my life to that point -- and the memories, obviously, are still extremely vivid even 25 years later!

So, now that I've bored you all to tears (if you got this far) and brought those memories to life again by describing them in detail, I can use those images and feelings to help WARM myself with my thoughts as the temps here have dropped so much overnight!

.... always a silver-lining benefit to almost every UNpleasant thing we experience or remember.... Yup, that's my belief, anyway, and I'm sticking to it! :hi:

80. Good morning!
It was an exciting day yesterday. I had to go to Frederick for an HR meeting, then we got some killer storms in the evening. TWO tornadoes touched down not far from me. :scared:
