Did you ever think about how much data can fit on a 1 GB SD card?
How about street maps of the US:

the entire east coast,

all of the Pacific NW,

most of coastal California except LA,

Las Vegas and northern New Mexico,

the Gulf Coast,

all of the northern Mid West including Chicago, the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming and Idaho,

Alaska, Puerto Rico

and about half of Canada.

Loungers who live in these parts.... you're on my GPS and I'm coming to visit!:hi:

1. Gotta admit,
I've never wondered. Until now.

:eyes:

At least now I won't have to lay awake tonight and ponder it, though. I love it when someone answers my questions before they occur to me. Saves so much trouble that way.

:hi:

5. SD = "secure digital". I think.
SD is the designation for a certain kind of memory card. As opposed to CF, which is a different type of card. Yes, GB = gigabyte.:hi:

3. Oh and I forgot to mention...
that in addition to all the street data, there is all kinds of useful local information.

For example, did you know that in Delaware Water Gap, PA., at the intersection of Broad St. and SR 611, there is a restaurant named "Doughboy's of the Poconos". They serve Italian food, the address is 124 Main St. (that must be SR 611) and the phone number is 570-421-1900.

Wanna order a pizza?

4. Does it have Democracy Lane in Blairstown, NJ on it?
Mapquest doesn't think that road exists, but it does. The reason no one can find democracy is because it's not only in the middle of nowhere, but non-existent on Mapquest.

9. Actually, that's about 40 minutes further into the Boonies from me.
I'll be up in that area this weekend though. I should take a picture of the street sign. The first time I remember driving past that sign I exclaimed to my friend, "Holy shit! Democracy Lane. No wonder none of us could find it. It's in fucking Blairstown. Who would look here?"

14. Well, I just pulled my house up off of Google Earth...

That is just not nearly the full total of the woods surrounding me. A former coworker of mine actually had to be rescued from Split Rock last weekend. They decided to go off-trail with no maps, compass anything. They left at 2pm and intended to hike about 3 miles. Finally, around 7:30pm they decided to call for help (amazingly their phones worked). Apparently, the cops located them fast with the phone's GPS, but they had gotten themselves into such bad terrain that it took the town's ATV police squad another three hours to get to them. I found this pretty amusing though, because none of the people in the group are the sharpest crayons in the box by any means and she was a bitch to work with. Also, prior to reading about it in the newspaper, I didn't even know the police department here had an ATV squad.

15. Is it the pointer by Lake Telemark?
Or the structure to the north of that?

It doesn't get much more rural than that, this close to NYC.

Yeah, all of civilization Rockaway is mostly mashed into the southern quarter of town. We're on the edge of that. Beyond us it's about 17 miles of nothing us to Rt. 23. Just woods and a military base.

I also just realized there's some weirdly named lakes in my town like "Hoot Owl Lake" and "Little Mitten Lake." :wtf: It goes along with Whaleback Waddy (name of a road...it was Waddy instead of road or anything at the end).

21. She's a total whackjob.
She pulls random shit like this every few months. His daughters are adults so she can't do anything about them, so she'll threaten him with losing custody of the son every now & then. It's always something absurd, and then when it doesn't end up working, she'll try to get more money out of him. She even tried to convince my stepsisters that he didn't pay child support. Fortunately, they're smart enough to realize that since she doesn't work and never inherited money, their dad was definitely paying child support as she lives in a huge house, drives a fancy car and goes on fancy vacations.

The woman even met me a year ago. She was nice enough to me then. What a freak.

8. This Garmin thing I have is fantastic.
It combines GPS with a palm-type organizer. So if I want to drive somewhere, I just say take me there and it gives me verbal directions, tells me where I am, when I can expect to arrive, etc.

And the maps and local info are excellent.

Now if would only tell me where the traffic problems are, I would really have something!:)

12. Why don't they just freakin make cars that drive themselves.

I don't think I would handle the GPS well. I hate when people tell me which way to go...I couldn't stand a machine telling me directions.

GPS: *robotic voice* Go Left now.

Me: Okay, okay...but theres a car in that lane.

GPS: Go left now.

Me: Fuck you GPS..I said there is a car.

GPS: Go left now.

Me: SHUT UP. OKAY ILL FUCKING GO LEFT..I'LL JUST CRASH INTO THE FUCKING CAR. GET OFF MY BACK.

GPS: Go left now.

ME: Do you want me to stop the car RIGHT NOW, GPS. DO you? CUZ ILL DO IT!!

GPS: You have missed the left turn. Turn left on nex.....*crunch*

Me: Not so talkative with some treads on you, are you robot. Your never gonna take us over if you can't protect yourself from my fury. Skynet my ass...You HAVE BEEN TERMINATED! BWHAHAHAHAHA. *Crash*

13. I have arguments with my GPS all the time. Her name is Sarah.
But she's hot, so I let her get away with a lot.

GPS: In 400 feet, turn left onto Main Street.

(I go past it, because of traffic.)

GPS: Off route. Recalculating....... In one half mile, turn left onto South Street.

(I still see traffic, so I ignore her. Again.)

GPS: Off route. Recalculating.... (I turn the volume down until I find a way around the traffic)

But she keeps whispering.... Off route. Recalculating....... Off route. Recalculating....

She never gets angry with me, no matter how much I ignore her.

Ultimately I can no longer resist. Women always have their way with me.

16. Don't let the robots tell you what to do!
Edited on Fri Sep-29-06 03:19 AM by Evoman
Thats what gives them the self-confidence they need to take over the human race! First its main street, then South Street, then its "kill your leaders".

Next thing you know, your living in a Robo-tatorship, and your hiding in ruins from your robot overlords. Pretty soon your cutting yourself just so you can feel pain and emotions...anything to distinguish yourself from THEM, and their cold unfeeling robot hearts.

Never turn your back on Sarah. She is planning your demise as we speak.

synthesizer called "Emily". She sounds like a 30-something prim-and-proper English school mistress with just a hint of devilment about her. I've used her to navigate all over the Pacific coast from Vancouver to San Diego. She never leads me wrong, always anticipates what I need to do when I need to do it, and directs me in a firm but alluring way.

Yes, I'm insanely in love with a 5" x 7" piece of plastic. I'm sure that, one day, she'll direct me over a cliff and I'll happily go, secure in the knowledge that we'll always be together.

I think I may need to get out more.

11. Yep, it's a 1 gigabyte card.
Now that've spent about 5 hours setting up the maps and downloading them from my PC to the GPS, I've thought of a better way to organize it.

Put the eastern US and eastern Canada on one 1 GB card, and everything else on a second one. The cards are very inexpensive now... I got four 1 GB cards for about $15 each from buy.com.

The really cool thing is, I can get maps of Europe as well!:hi:
