Green tea? Does it do all that is supposed to do?
It seems like many people swear by green tea for weight loss, cancer prevention, etc. Is it all that is cracked up to be?

3. It is very healthy, but I wouldn't rely on it for weight loss.
You're better off eating healthy and exercising.

Ignore the poster above about the taste. She just has probably had crappy green tea. It varies a lot in terms of taste. Yogi's Green Tea Kombucha and Green Chai teas taste awesome. Some of it does taste like crap though. Just don't buy that kind.

4. i had whatever green tea it is they have in japan
Edited on Wed Sep-27-06 11:16 PM by pitohui
i figure they know their green teas and the real thing, is, let's be honest, shitty

anyway, presumably, the poster is going to find out at the first sip what it tastes like so our opinions won't matter much either way on matters of taste

oh, and that green tea ice cream they have -- you can't stop yourself from thinking it's almost, almost, as good as if it were coffee ice cream

but not quite

sigh

6. I don't know about weight loss, but it is immensely good for one's health
In my opinion, it tastes wonderful, though it's definitely in a class by itself and can take some getting used to.

But green tea comes in many varieties, and there are bound to be a few that you will like. I suggest you stay away from anything that comes in a tea bag -- it's all shitty, low qualilty tea of negligable medicinal/health value, unless you find one of the few that come from legitimate Japanese tea producers (Ippido being the number one). You really want loose leaf green tea. Try a few varieties of differing qualities, and see what you like.

The Japanese also make green teas with roasted rice - if you find yourself having difficulty getting to like the taste of green tea, you might very well like the roasted rice kind: it's a little more friendly to the American pallate, while still maintaining the good healthy qualities of the tea.

7. Green tea is great home brewed, but not Arizona Ice Tea brand
or other major bottled brands.

read the label on those bottles,
One bottle is two and half servings so when you read the label
they tell you how much sugar (corn syrup) and calories are in one serving

38 grams for one serving.

8. And not just sugar, and not just corn syrup - but HIGH FRUCTOSE
corn syrup.

I bought a bottle of Arizona Green Tea with Ginseng this summer because I was travelling and hadn't made my own pot of it, and drank some, and thought, "What the fucking fuck?" Totally unlike any green tea I'd ever had before.

So I looked on the label, and yep - it's loaded with high fructose corn syrup.

Every dead Japanese is rolling in his or her grave over that one.

9. Have a neighbor that quit drinking Pop
started drinking the Arizona brand until I pointed out what was on the label
He started gaining weight after two weeks on the stuff.

I gave him some real green tea and he couldn't drink it

LOL ......I like coffee though and tea sometimes at night.

11. I just drink it because I like it. If it is healthy, I consider it an add
bonus. There are lots of wonderful green teas so I think anyone can find a favorite.

Here are a few of mine:
sencha- grassy and some are almost flowery

genmaicha- has the added flavor of roasted rice

hojicha- pan roasted green tea (if you love coffee, dark chocolate, and dark beers you might like this one) **It's amazing as iced tea, too.

One thing to remember is that you pour the water over the tea just before the water reaches the boiling point. Otherwise, you'll end up with bitter tea.

13. No Idea But I Drink Gallons Of It (Tea Lover)
My favorite has always been sencha and jasmine, which I get in Chinese herb stores or just mix my Grace Rare Tea Befoe The Rain Jasmine (best jasmine ever) with loose sencha.

Of course, I don't limit myself to green teas - I drink white, Assam, Ceylon, Darjeeling ...

15. Same here.
I try to avoid black teas (they make my hands too shaky for painting), but we drink tons of green tea. Just restocked on "Gunpowder" yesterday. :hi: REP!

16. It's all I ever drink really...
I got started on it in Japan where they sell bottles of it in vending machines on the street like we sell Dr. Pepper. I usually take 3 green tea bags, 3 chai tea bags and boil them together for about 6 minutes, then take that sorta concentrated mix, put it in a pitcher, fill the rest of it with water, and enjoy. I don't know about the cancer stuff. I do know I feel a good bit better after drinking green tea than with coffee. Another thing I've noticed is that, after a long run (12 miles or more), my legs aren't nearly as sore as they used to be.

19. 4 cups green, three cups black a day.
Weight loss I don't know, I was slim before I began drinking the above amounts of tea, 5'11 165. About the same now. In the morning one green, at work I have one green and two black in bags, because it is just more convenient. A green when I get home, one black with dinner, and another green in the evening (all loose tea). I've heard that green helps prevent skin cancers, so I rub the bags on my face, neck and hands. I've had weird bumps and blemishes disappear, so maybe green tea is good for this. While I can't say conclusively, I would say that tea and green tea particularly is a good thing and would not stop drinking them.

21. I like it, but it makes me nauseated for some reason.
I thought it was the caffiene, but I can drink tons of coffee without feeling sick. Too much black tea without milk in it does the same thing. But for some reason, I drink a few sips of green tea and I feel like I am going to vomit. Strange.

23. Nope
if you pour green tea on a repuke, all that happens is the repuke gets wet. It doesn't really dissolve them. :-)
