8. I feel a little Emily Dickinson coming over me:
I'm Nobody! Who are you?
Are you—Nobody—Too?
Then there's a pair of us!
Don't tell! they'd advertise—you know!

How dreary—to be—Somebody!
How public—like a Frog—
To tell one's name—the livelong June—
To an admiring Bog!

30. How can anyone answer "who" without saying "what"?
Edited on Fri Sep-29-06 01:48 AM by UncleSepp
(On edit: This is intended to have a got-a-buzz-on, friendly, relaxed shooting the bull tone. I realized it might have sounded argumentative, which is the opposite of how it is supposed to sound. :-) )

A person can say "My name is..." but that doesn't say who he is, only what he is called. A person can say "I am (characteristic)" but that still doesn't say who he is, only what he is like.

The answer to "who are you" is almost always contextual - it might be "I am the washing machine repairman" if you're knocking on the door of a house containing a broken washing machine, or "I am the father of the bride" at a wedding, or "I am a Democrat" when answering a political survey, but really, do any of those answer the question "Who are you" out of context?

I spent some time at a conference recently, at which I often heard the phrase "I identify as..." and seldom heard "I am...". There was much discussion of labels. That really got me to thinking about how to answer the question "who are you" without using labels, and of how to express identity from the inside, referring to essential nature.

The context for this question was "who are you in this life". In this life, I am that which seeks wholeness. It may not have always the case, but in this life, it is. I certainly hope I stay that way. Being that which seeks division does not end well.
