Why don't public telephones have level surfaces any more?
Perhaps this is some local thing, but it has been the case in NV, OK and ME. If I have a PDA or a water bottle that I need to put down, but have readily available, I can't do it. Or if need a flat surface to look through the phone book, there isn't one. I find it very annoying. Especially the fact that it's not only the area beneath the telephone, but the "roof" of the compartment is pitched too. grrrrr!

1. or a martini!
crap i've noticed this too

every time i've tried to use a public telephone in recent history there has been no place for my martini

so it's actually some world wide conspiracy and not merely the casino's attempt to get me to drink up, toss the cup, and just order another after the phone call, eh?

3. You mean you can actually find public telephones these days? ...
With the proliferation of cell phones, it seems like phone booths have gone the way of gas stations that wash your windows.

4. I can find some, but they aren't scattered randomly. When it comes to
public telephones it seems to be a matter of feast or famine.
