Phone rings...Caller ID shows NRA !!!! Hummm
I answer the phone; "Hello" wait through about two seconds of dead-air then hear; "I'm looking for Richard." "This is he" I answered.

"This is the NRA and we have one question regarding Hillary Clinton...."
I interrupted the caller and said: "I love Hillary Clinton, good night." and hung up on the bitch.

1. nice!
I thought it would be a smarmy recording of their new pres Tom Selleck, offering mustache rides to potential-new-members  (um, not that you are.)

Quick thinkin' rustydog!

2. Eww....
Tom Selleck is their new president?

Oddly enough, I'm fine with the NRA, but Tom Selleck weirds me out.

5. I heard it on DU,
as a linked thing last week I think. Something about Charlton Heston's "deterioration" making him not the best spokesmen anymore (perhaps he is just kept away from the real guns and given the ones with corks or flags that say "bang!"?)

Much entertaining banter here about the irony of the Selleck choice, much speculation of "closeted" issues  A good laugh had by all, but that's all I know from here.
TS = creepy indeed. Met him backstage when my boss was receiving a Kennedy Center Honor---TS was giving an intro for one of the other recipients---and he was not a very nice guy.

Here's a HuffPo link on it:

:hi:

9. I believe the NRA president is still Sandra Froman,
a lawyer. Selleck was discussed as a future president, IIRC.

3. I am a past member, maybe 25 years ago
Their far right retardism back then was way too much to stomach. they don't give a shit about the 2nd amendment, they are about raising money.
Lapierre and heston are about as anti-American as the communists were.

12. That was my fathers reason for quitting also
Don't get me wrong we have guns, we are hunters, but we also recognize that you don't need a fully automatic AK-47 to hunt deer.

4. Careful - they can shoot you through the phone.
It sounds implausible, I know. But it's just true.

18. It sure did.
There were a lot of good, drunken nights, but most people forget about the incredible amount of work that actually needs to be done. Either that or they went to a shitty school. By the end of my senior year, I was so ready to leave. In fact, I partied at least twice as much in the 2 years post-college as I did during college. A 40-hour work week was a blessing after the 100-hour weeks I'd been putting in.

7. I had to interview an NRA field rep once
I was a sportswriter, but the news desk was short, so I did a few stories for a couple weeks.

Made me sick, but journalistic objectivity and all that...

10. Explanation of the dead-air time:
It's a machine that makes the calls. If it detects a second or so of sound and then silence, it assumes it's a human rather than an answering machine and forwards the call to a human drone.

I've developed just such a system. Not for the NRA, though.

13. I would've been curious as to what they'd say.
And then waste as much time of theirs as possible so they can't go call someone else.

19. hmmm.... I wonder if they're targeting Dems
I saw the NRA come up on my caller ID recently but didn't bother to answer the phone because I couldn't imagine why they would be calling me. Now I wish I would have answered to see if it was about Hillary.
