Who has memories of the "sex thread riot"?
Edited on Tue Sep-26-06 03:59 PM by LoZoccolo
This was the evening where some people noticed the moderators didn't seem to be looking and started posting sex threads, and it blew up into a lot of people doing it, and the next day there was a bulletin saying that the fun's over.

I am not trying to instigate anything, I'm just examining our history. It's also interesting from a group psychology standpoint.

7. Hmmmm. Not sure if I know what you're talking about.
I often wonder if someone were to start a separate board for DUer sex threads, if it would stay the same level as pre-riot, or get way way out there.

:)

Coming from me, there's a REASON why all renaissance portraits have the women with a well-fed shape.

38. Well, maybe the mods feel that an assertion that one's politics is tied to
one's sexual preferences is kind of stupid, and therefore not valid as a discussion item?

Could be, couldn't it? And you can always ask; the mods DO frequently respond and tell you they locked a thread.

Besides, if the kids want sexual content they'll do like the rest of us do and go to porn sites, lol. That sounds sick but it's so freaking easy. I don't know what the answer is on this tip but it does seem to be conundrum.

39. YOu never heard the definition of "community?" DU, in case you've not
gotten the news, considers itself a community.

Communities have rules. Thosw who choose to live in those communities can live with the rules, try to change them or go find another community more to their liking.

It's a free country.

43. Redundant and uncalled for...
Your post, aside from having a condescending and insulting tone, doesn't actually debate anything I said. It seems it could use an attitude adjustment.

More over, there is no official rule in DU that bans threads dealing with sexuality.

So unless you consider it the responsibility of others to shield childeren from bad influences... (something actually address in my posts, that is...)

implied intent of the rule, and trample all over the place on my High Horse, trying to muddy all the guidelines that so many thousands have become comfortable with and agreed through lo these may years, and found them reasonable, but now YOU demand DEBATE and lift up the straw men into prominent view...

Are you sure this is the place where you want to spend your time? do you really feel you'll be comfortable here?

Just considering your feelings, after all.

40. Because, like many things around here -
people can't seem to contain themselves and not do everything over the top. Hardcore Loungers seem to operate under the "give us an inch, we'll take a mile" philosophy.

So, back in the sex thread days - one person would post something, and then a brazillion other posters would post additional threads trying to outdo one another. It devolved into one huge clusterfuck from there, and you couldn't poke your head in the Lounge without seeing a constantly degenerating forum.

So - the short of it is: Sex threads were banned because it seems DUers aren't grown up enough to control themselves.

then if you go in there you'll get a 'reputation', lol.

I think it's an interesting idea since people here want to flirt so bad. And I have to say that there does seem to be some degree of exhibitionism to it as well, because people don't seem to want to do it in pm's or in chat rooms which to me would seem to be alot more intimate. No judgement, just an observation.

I bet it would be more enforcement than the moderators want to put up with and there are ways they could get in trouble for letting too much adult content on here. I bet it wouldn't be worth it for them.

37. A couple of reasons,
bandwidth, the Lounge is provided as stress relief from what is essentially a political board, there are other venues for hot talk and bandwidth.

The Lounge sometimes seems risque because it pushes the limits of what the mods will permit. If anything goes, there's no risk, no pleasure.

That's why flirting, on boards or in person, is such fun.

the "OK, the fun's over" psot from Skinner at the top of each forum page.

Never knew what the fun was that I had missed. But hey, I was new here, so I probably wouldn't have been invited into the fun anyway, not knowing anyone and all.

Be damned interesting to read an archive of those threads, but probably depressing as well, seeing the names of the departed.

a lot of fun, with people discussing a particular time in DU's lifespan where there seemed to be a communal riot, with some enjoying it more than others.

I really wish I hadn't missed it.

But if ANYONE (and you know who you are) thinks this is the time to act like an eight-grader, and break in here and whine about "freedom of speech," and "we're adults, so why can't we?, I'm going to kick your ass. I'm in that kind of mood tonight.

DU is a community. All communities have standards which, although they may not be agreed upon my all members, are honored by all members. And if you don't feel you can honor all the standards, whether you agree with them or not, maybe this is not the community for you to belong to. I don't agree every one of the standards, but I honor them because they're the community's standards. If at any time I find that a problem, I don't have to come here, do I? But I do, so no problem.

I, for example, don't give a rat's about my lawn. It can grow for a month and get raggedy, and I don't care. But that does not mean I should move into a neighborhood where EVERYONE else keeps his lawn neatly trimmed. It's not the place for me.

And if you find the rules here too restrictive, ask yourself if this is the place for you.

And for those of you who can't seem to figure out why we don't permit sex threads, choose the explanation that you like best:

1. Because this is a website for discussing politics.

2. Because this isn't an aol chat room.

3. Because I say so.
