Most misogynistic song you've ever heard?
The movie thread made me think of this topic. There seem to be some more blatant options in the world of music; I'll just name a few off of the top of my head. Of course, it's probably good to account for the release date of the song when judging how misogynistic it comes across. Also, I would make a distinction between songs that are just "dirty" (maybe 'cause there are so many of them) and ones that are more blatantly misogynistic, but that is definitely a subjective judgment. Here are a few that might qualify:

"If You Wanna be Happy" by Jimmy Soul

"Run for Your Life" by the Beatles (I've often seen this one mentioned so I'll include it, though it's probably too tongue-in-cheek to really qualify)

"I'd Rather be a Man" and "You Lie Down with Dogs" by the Alan Parsons Project (however, these are part of a concept album discussing relationship-related topics with one side coming from a man's perspective and the other coming from a woman's; whoever wrote these had to have been coming out of a really bad relationship, though, judging by the harshness of the lyrics)

"When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" by Dr. Hook (alright, I'm not totally serious about this one, but it is essentially saying you can't trust a good-looking woman; kind of a soft-rock take on "If You Wanna be Happy"!)

"Under My Thumb" by the Rolling Stones (yeah, I'm sure it's tongue-in-cheek, but if you don't consider that it's some pretty harsh stuff; they've also got "Stupid Girl" which I personally find more funny than misogynistic, and more than a few other borderlines)

"Dirty Little Girl", "All the Girls Love Alice", "Sweet Painted Lady" by Elton John (Bernie was obviously pissed at someone when he wrote the lyrics for the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album!)

I've seen stuff like The Knack's "My Sharona" and "Good Girls Don't" make lists of misogynistic songs, but I consider these more suggestive than misogynistic. If they were played by a "cock-rock" and not a "power-pop" band, no one would think twice. I mean, the Raspberries had sex on the brain in most of their songs, but I don't usually hear them called misogynists ("All Through the Night" may come pretty close, though!). Again, I guess that's why these lists are so subjective.

Then, of course, there's "Cherry Pie" by Warrant, another "dirty" one that caused some controversy. And, from the same era, "It's So Easy" by Guns 'n Roses

I'm not even going to attempt to try rap/hip-hop. I'm not into the genre much, and I'm sure I would have trouble distingushing between the "ironic" and the blatantly misogynistic. Someone who knows more about the genre can point some out, though, as I'm sure there are plenty of candidates.

Anyway, those are a few possibilities; add any y'all think qualify.

Guns 'n Roses have several that would fit into the category, although, in their defense, a lot of this seemed to go along with the posturing of late-eighties hard-rock bands. (The original album cover of Appetite for Destruction probably offends worse than any of their songs!)

:hi:

******

On an unrelated note, I would add the Guess Who's live version of "American Woman", from the Paramount album to the list. That one gets pretty explicit for a song of its era.

6. Yeah, I think a number of these are like that
Edited on Tue Sep-26-06 08:58 AM by last_texas_dem
I wasn't sure about including several of them I included in the initial post because I figured many of them to be tongue-in-cheek and not demonstrating their performers to be truly misognyist. But I guess if you consider that "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd has become a racist anthem to many when it's really not about that at all, a song can be considered misogynist if it's open to that interpretation. I wasn't really trying to condemn all these songs as being misognyistic (I like most of them, actually, and I'm not a misogynist) in making the post, I just like discussing controversial (or at least semi-controversial) music-related issues!

44. That's not true at all.
Interpretation, if it's completely incorrect, cannot make anything something that it's not. Someone's stupidity in analysis should not condemn a work of art.

51. Well
Edited on Tue Sep-26-06 02:59 PM by last_texas_dem
I think we're coming from pretty much the same place on this. My post above ended up pretty convoluted, even with an edit. What I was trying to say was that I decided to include songs in my initial post that I can't say for sure whether the composer intended for them to send a misogynistic message (only the composer themself can really say for sure, and I've never heard the composers comment about most of the songs I included) but either leave a strong impression of such or have been commonly interpreted as such. My point in mentioning the songs was to discuss them; not to condemn them. I agree that misinterpretation cannot change the intent of the maker of a piece of art, but art containing elements that make it open to this sort of misinterpretation can be interesting to try to figure out what point is being made.

ON EDIT: I think the main problem with my above post (why I said it was convoluted) is the way I used the word "considered" in the second sentence. Re-reading it in a way that was not my intent when writing it, it sounds like I'm saying "considered" in the sense of "We will consider this to be settled fact" when what I meant was "We will discuss and consider this argument on its merits." Yeah, I know I should've just made this clear the first time around, but clarity isn't always the strongest suit of my (attempts at) communication!

98. The thing about that song...
...is that, while the lyrics are as offensive as you can imagine, the gentle, hesitiant melody (which sounds almost like an old English folk ballad) completely contradicts it in tone -- I always get the feeling that the character doesn't really mean the words he's saying, even if he can't bring himself to admit it.

15. Bitch School by Spinal Tap

But, of course, it was written to satirize the often thinly veiled misogyny so common in 'heavy metal' lyrics.

You been bad
Don't do what I say.
You don't listen.
And you never obey.
Try to teach you.
But you just won't be good.
You won't behave the way
A big girl should.
It's time to give the whip a crack.
I'm gonna have to send you back to
Bitch School.
Bitch School.
You're a beauty.
You're the best of your breed.
You're a handful.
And I know what you need.
You need training.
Gonna bring you to heel.
I'm gonna break you with my will of steel.
Discipline's my middle name.
And no one comes back the same from
Bitch School.
Bitch School.
No more sniffling strangers, or running free at night.
You think my bark's bad, honey - wait till you feel my bite.
You got problems.
You whine and you beg.
When I'm busy,
You wanna dance with my leg.
I'm gonna chain you.
Make you sleep out of doors.
You're so fetching when you're down on all fours.
And when you hear your master,
You will come a little faster, thanks to
Bitch School.

20. "Yankee Lady" by Jesse Winchester
"I lived with the decent folks
In the hills of old Vermont
Where what you do all day
Depends on what you want
And I took up with a woman there
Though I was still a kid
And I smile like the sun
To think of all the loving that we did
She rose each morning and went off to work
And she kept me with her pay
I was making sweet love all night
And playing this old guitar all day
And I got apple cider and homemade bread
That would make a man kneel down he would say grace
And clean linens on our bed
And a warm feet fire place
(Refrain)
Yankee lady so good to me
Yankee lady just a memory
Yankee lady so good to me
Your memories gonna have to do for me

An autumn walk on a old country road
With a million flaming trees
I was feeling a little uneasy
Cause there was winter chill in the breeze
And she said, "Oh Jesse, look over there,
I see birds are they are all southward bound
Oh Jesse, I'm so afraid
We are going to lose the love that we've found
(Refrain)

I don't know what called to me
But I know that I plain had to go
I left that little old Vermont town
To live down in sunny Mexico
And now when I can see myself
As a stranger by my birth
The Yankee lady's old memory
To Remind me of my worth
(Refrain)

So let's get this straight: She works all day to support both of them AND does a superb job of housekeeping and cooking, while he sits around all day playing his guitar. Then all of a sudden, he just up and leaves her, but, hey, give him a break, he's really, really, really nostalgic about her. :puke:

31. I may need help with this one.
I don't even know if a song can be misogynistic. It seems further removed to me than a book or a movie, from the author's point of view that is...so hard to define. Most song don't offend me if they have this viewpoint, they're only three minutes long and I just turn them off. Some of Eminem's stuff seemed to indicate that he is a misogynist...I don't know if that's changed or not. Of course he put out that movie that kind of explains where his resentments come from, but I don't think all women should be painted with that broad brush.

Anyway, the only song that came to mind is "Bodies" by the Sex Pistols. If anyone wants to weigh in on it I'd love to hear other opinions. I just think the song is so dismissive of the woman and her circumstance and point of view that it's a little disturbing. It would make a great pro-life theme if those folks were into punk. I love the Sex Pistols otherwise and if there is some irony I'm missing here someone please clue me in.

"She was a girl from birmingham
She just had an abortion
She was a case of insanity
Her name was pauline she lived in a tree
She was a no one who killed her baby
She sent her letters from the country
She was an animal she was a bloody disgrase

Body Im not an animal
Body Im not an animal

Dragged on a table in factory
Illegitimate place to be
In a packet in a lavatory
Die little baby screaming fucking bloody mess
Its not an animal its an abortion

Body Im not animal
Mummy Im not an abortion

Throbbing squirm, gurgling bloody mess
Im not an discharge, Im not a loss in
Protein, Im not a throbbing squirm

Fuck this and fuck that fuck it all and
Fuck the fucking brat

he's telling it from the point of view of the fetus and really demonizing the mother and not taking into account her circumstance. I think this was deliberate, and in some respect I think he (whomever the author of the lyrics is) makes some valid points about how the fetus might be viewed by some, but that's no reason to totally discount and dehumanize the adult female in this situation.

34. "Polly" by Nirvana, though they claimed it was satirical
I'll go with their convoluted defense of "Rape Me" as a commentary on the Bosnian-Croatian war (Chris Novislec is part Serbian, I believe, which is where the song came from), but "Polly"'s matter-of-factness towards the antogonists' brutalizing the girl of the title is pretty disturbing.

45. Polly wasn't satirical - it was based on a real-life occurrance.
They played it several times at concerts benefitting rape victims.

52. They never claimed it was satirical. It's based on a real rape.
From wikipedia:

According to Michael Azerrad's 1993 Nirvana biography Come As You Are, "Polly" is based on the true story of a female rape victim from Tacoma, Washington. The girl, 14, was abducted in 1987 while returning from a punk rock show, and was raped and tortured by her abductor. Cobain's only narrative flourish is that the victim manages to escape by flirting with her captor, convincing him to let her go.

In the liner notes to Nirvana's 1992 compilation Incesticide, Cobain expressed disdain for an incident which occurred after the song's release on Nevermind. "Last year, a girl was raped by two wastes of sperm and eggs while they sang the lyrics to our song 'Polly,'" he wrote. "I have a hard time carrying on knowing there are plankton like that in our audience."

Hardly misogynist. And the poster above is correct, Nirvana did perform the song at rape victim benefits.

83. OK, clarification: SONG isn't misogynist, but the characters IN it are
The message isn't meant as misogyny, but the "characters" who are spouting the lyrics are misogynists. And by "satirical," I meant that the song was a satire of how rapists might think. (Hence the gruesome pun on the girl's name and the situation she's in.)

I read the liner notes for Insecticide as well, and they were furious--basically, they said "If you hate women or homosexuals we don't want you as fans." Bravo, Kurt.

39. "Every Breath You Take"
I was in a waiting room today and watched as 2 ca. 5-year-olds played. The 3-year-old brother of the girl was FREAKING OUT that he could NOT control his sister. He demanded that she STOP playing hide-n-seek and sit next to HIM. She ignored him and he SCREAMED his head off as his mother entreated him to join in the game. It was bizarre...

61. I think that one's
actually a sort of oddly feminist song, upon close examination of the lyrics. But it's definitely one that could be interpreted as such (the fact that Alice Cooper was singing it probably encouraged this idea) and I think it got into some controversy over the question of what AC's intention was upon its release.

Here are the lyrics:

Man's got his woman to take his seed
He's got the power - oh
She's got the need
She spends her life through pleasing up her man
She feeds him dinner or anything she can

She cries alone at night too often
He smokes and drinks and don't come home at all
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed

Man makes your hair gray
He's your life's mistake
All you're really lookin' for is an even break
He lies right at you
You know you hate this game
He slaps you once in a while and you live and love in pain

She cries alone at night too often
He smokes and drinks and don't come home at all
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed

Black eyes all of the time
Don't spend a dime
Clean up this grime
And you there down on your knees begging me please come
Watch me bleed

Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed

67. roflmao
'tis like an x-rated nursery rhyme...

"To take off my shirt
And pull down my britches
If shes got big titties
I squeeze em and holdem
While she suck my d*ck and lick my scrotum..."

there was a time when this gangsta rap had some bite but now it's just comical, I think after people like Lil Kim started rebutting this stuff it became ridiculous and laughable. I don't feel insulted by it, I just feel embarassed for the singer, but I am impressed by the imperfect rhyme of 'hold 'em' and 'scrotum' which is one I wouldn't have thought of...

Not Tonight -- Little Kim

"The moral of the story is this
If you aint lickin' this,
you aint stickin' this
And I got witnesses, ask any n***** I been with
They aint hit sh*t till they stuck they tongue in this..."

and so on and so forth.

It's all about a woman who is independent and strong, and because of that the other girls hate her. But after her father takes away her power and puts her back in her place, she's eligible to be enjoyed by a suitor--because girls who step outside gender norms are unlovable.

85. Gangsta Misogyny

http://www.albany.edu/scj/jcjpc/vol8is2/armstrong.html

GANGSTA MISOGYNY: A CONTENT ANALYSIS OF THE PORTRAYALS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN RAP MUSIC, 1987-1993*

Journal of Criminal Justice and Popular Culture, 8(2) (2001) 96-126

excerpt:
Too $hort (1993a) hurled this tirade:

You fuck with us, bitch, something gettin' broken
Your leg, arm, jaw, nose, pick a part.

In N.W.A's (1989a) "A Bitch Iz A Bitch," money-hungry or stuck-up women are subsumed under the same solution: "Slam her ass in a ditch." Too $hort slaps women who act "shitty" (1988b) or bold (1992b). Responses to mental slowness are equally harsh. Bushwick Bill (1992c) kicks a woman's ass if her "brain don't click." By choosing the wrong friends, "bitches" either "need stitches" (Willie D 1992b) or get drop-kicked (Ice-T 1993). Personal characteristics also induce violence. In "Punk Bitch," Too $hort (1990b) expresses his desire to slap all bald-headed women. Ice-T (1991b) pushes a woman to the floor because "she looked like Godzilla." Because a woman had "more crabs than a sea-food platter," Eazy-E (1988e) "slapped the ho" and proudly proclaimed himself a "woman-beater." The Geto Boys (1993d) handed down comparable excesses when they threw an "unsanitary bitch" into a ditch.
