What is the saddest movie you've seen?
For me, it's "Harry and Tonto". When he says goodbye to Tonto... and when he chases that cat on the beach at the end...

I can't watch it anymore. It is TOO DAMN SAD.

1. In terms of emotional content? "Serenity"...
In terms of being pathetic, Star Trek Nemesis or Star Wars episode 1, 2, or 3...

It's a good character too.

He always plays some "funny lookin'" ancillary character. I had no idea he could carry a movie so well.

Just a crushing anti-war film. Unlike almost every other film that contains sadness, this one has absolutely nothing in it to make one less sad. And the music (Albinoni's "Adagio in G minor") multiplies the tragedy.

(I think that was the title.) Very sad to me...about exploited illegals working in London, falling prey to some bad bad people. I really hated the way that the main characters were preyed upon, just to keep their secrets and earn a few pounds for their loved-ones and to provide the simplest things (like hope of escape) for themselves.
It gave me a sense of colossal (and largely unknown) unfairness, which for me is the saddest thing.

ALSO: Dark Water (from a couple of years ago, the lost-divers one...yikes.)

54. Ballady Soldatye (Ballad of a Soldier)
At least, that's the one that has stayed in my mind most recently since I saw it in a history class. It is simple, both in terms of its story and its cinematography. We watched it because from a historical point of view, some of the particular events of the film indicated a new openness in Soviet historiography (pre-dating Glastnost by over 20 years).

The thing that gets you about the story itself is that the opening narration tells you that the main character does not survive the war. So early on, you think you know what to expect. But the mere fact that you know the ending doesn't prepare you for it at all. The storytelling is so rich, and you become so sympathetic to the characters, that at the end of the movie you can't believe the guy actually dies.

For those of you who've mentioned Gallipoli, I've seen Gallipoli, and it didn't really have a big impact on me. I mean, here's a complex, compelling movie, but when it ended all I could think was "It's WWI, what did anyone expect?"

Ballad of a Soldier kept me awake at night. *That's* how good it was. 10 times better than Gallipoli.

I find some scenes so sad, so disturbing that I really cannot watch the film, even though I think it's a great movie. The scene where Dian Fosse finds the silverback gorilla's body with just its head and feet cut off is just about the most horrible scene imaginable. It really distills into a single moment how truly evil human beings can be.

72. I will second this one
I'm not sure if it's really the one that gave me the deepest feeling of sadness I ever felt in reaction to a movie but it was the First movie I remember that I reacted to in that way. I remember I saw it in school (elementary school) and I had to struggle real hard not to let anyone see how it was affecting me.

It didn't help I suppose that was during the time we had a dog which we found as a stray and took in and not long after had to be put down due to a severe heart worm infestation.

71. Killer double feature: "Distant Voices Still Lives"/"The Long Day Closes"
There are a handful of tearjerking scenes in each--the Christmas day meltdown in the former, and the young protagonists' heartbreak as he watches his best friend run off with someone else in the latter. But the overall tone of both (the second is the sequel to the first) is so mournful and heartbreaking, it's almost too much to bear.

You have to be very, very patient with these two films--one very extended shot in "Long Day" is nothing but a brick wall in the rain as Nat King Cole sings "Stardust." Yet it's so perfectly composed and put together, it's an example of genuine motion picture art.

Shockingly, I don't think there's ever been a soundtrack released for either film--amazing, since it's some of the best use of music you'll ever see or hear in a movie.

76. The original "Madame X" (1966) and "Biscuit Eater" (1940)
"Madame X". Mean ole mother-in-law made her give up her baby and husband because she would ruin hubby's chances in politics as she was a show-girl. Later on as a homeless woman she goes to court and her son defends her but doesn't know she's his mom. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060645/

"Biscuit Eater", http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0032254/
Sad enough it made grown men cry. Two little boys have faith in a dog they name Promise, so much faith that they enter him in the championship trials for bird dogs. The favorite is Georgia Boy bred and trained by the boys' fathers. And if Georgia Boy doesn't win, the fathers may both lose their jobs.

I was too numb to cry after watching that movie. Like being kicked in the gut.
