Please tell me if you have received this alarming email today.
I have no way of checking this out because we're outward bound to a movie preview. Thank you, fellow sleuths.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Emails with pictures of Osama Bin-Laden

hanged are being sent and the moment that

you open these emails your computer will

crash and you will not be able to fix it!

If you get an email along the lines of

"Osama Bin Laden Captured" or "Osama

Hanged" don't open the attachment.

This e-mail is being distributed through

countries around the globe, but mainly in

the US and Israel.

Be considerate & send this warning to

whomever you know.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS:

You should be alert during the next days:
Do not open any message with an attached

filed called "Invitation" regardless of who

sent it.

It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch

which "burns" the whole hard disc C of

your computer.

This virus will be received from someone

who has your e-mail address in his/her

contact list, that is why you should send

this e-mail to all your contacts.

It is better to receive this message 25

times than to receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called "invitation",

though sent by a friend, do not open it and

shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN,

it has been classified by Microsoft as the

most destructive virus ever.

This virus was discovered by McAfee

yesterday, and there is no repair yet for

this kind of virus.

This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector

of the Hard Disc, where the vital

information is kept.

1. According to snopes, real but outdated.
http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/osama.asp

Virus: "Osama bin Laden Captured" and "Osama bin Laden Hanged"

Status: Real, but outdated.

Examples:

Hey, Just got this from CNN, Osama Bin Laden has been captured! A video and some pictures have been released. Go to the link below for pictures, I will update the page with the video as soon as I can.

Osama Found Hanged

Osama Bin Ladin was found hanged by two CNN journalists early Wedensday evening.

As evidence they took several photos, some of which i have included here.

As yet, this information has not hit the headlines due to Bush wanting confirmation of his identity but the journalists have released some early photos over the internet..

http://24.13.130.125:89/OsamaFoundDead.zip

Turn on your TV.
Osama Bin Laden has been captured.

While CNN has no pictures at this point of time, the military channel (PPV) released some pictures.
I managed to capture a couple of these pictures off my TV.
Ive attached a slideshow containing all the pictures I managed to capture.
I apologize for the low quality, its the best I could do at this point of time.
Hopefully CNN will have pictures and a video soon.

God bless the USA!

Variations: In mid-2006 the "Osama" virus warnings were combined with the text of the (hoax) "Invitation" virus warning.

Origins: There
are few headlines that would grab the attention of more computer users around the world than news of Osama bin Laden's having been captured or killed, so that's exactly the bait pranksters have used more than once in attempting to lure unsuspecting victims users of Microsoft Windows platforms into installing malicious code onto their computers.

In July 2004 a message claiming to offer links to photographs of Osama Bin Laden's suicide was spammed to multiple newsgroups. The links actually tricked users into opening a file that installed the Backdoor.Hacarmy.D trojan horse.

In June 2005, similarly-themed e-mail message claimed to offer images of the capture and arrest of Osama bin Laden scanned from news videos and collected in an attached ZIP file, but the attachment actually harbored a version of the Psyme Trojan.

Both trojans were easily detected and removed with updated virus protection software, and neither Osama message is circulating widely or poses much of a threat to PC users any more.

5. Well, one of my cousins thought it was important to send this to me...
I don't send them to anyone else. Just a policy because I believe only about 20% or less of what I read on the Internet. And I DO require sources!

3. An Olympic torch.....

I would much prefer a virus that 'opens the doors of perception on the hard disc C' and here is my warning about this imaginary virus:

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to email to you "Girl, we couldn't get much higher"
Come on virus light my fire!
Come on virus light my fire!
Try to set hard disc C on fire!
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose data
And our hard drive becomes a funeral pyre....

4. I found this:

http://www.hoax-slayer.com/bin-laden-captured.html

Osama Bin Laden Virus Emails
Summary:

Emails claim that Osama Bin Laden has been captured or hanged and ask recipients to open an attachment or follow a link for more information.

Status:
False, message leads to trojan

Example(Submitted, July 2005)
Turn on your TV!!!

Osama Bin Laden has been captured. While CNN has no pictures at this point of time, the military channel (PPV) released some. I managed to capture a couple of these pictures off my TV. Ive attached a slideshow containing all the pictures I managed to capture. I apologize for the low quality, its the best I could do at this point of time. Hopefully CNN will have pictures and a video soon.

God bless the USA!

Commentary:
Emails are circulating that claim that Osama Bin Laden has been captured or has been found hanged. The information in these emails is false. Bin Laden has not been captured.

Opening the attachment that comes with these emails or clicking on a link in the message may install a malicious trojan on the recipient's computer. There are several versions of the message. Some carry an attachment that supposedly contains photographs of the capture. Others may include a link to a website that supposedly shows pictures or news footage of Osama Bin Laden's arrest.

Other malicious messages that used similar false information about Osama Bin Laden were also distributed in 2004.

As well as the trojan bearing messages themselves, a number of warning emails about the messages are being circulated. The emails warn recipients about the danger of opening messages about Bin Laden. Although the danger is real, the warning messages are seriously exaggerated. The trojan that comes with the Bin Laden emails is certainly malicious, but it is unlikely to damage the infected computer to such an extent that it cannot be repaired. One of these warnings is included below:

Just now a message was received from the Israeli police:

Emails with pictures of Osama Bin-Laden hanged are being sent and the moment that you open these emails your computer will crash and you will not be able to fix it!!!

This e-mail is being distributed through countries around the globe, but mainly in the US and Israel.

Fake information about famous (or infamous) people is often used as a means of distributing email worms or trojans. In June, 2005 an email message about the apparent suicide of Michael Jackson directed recipients to a website that downloaded a trojan. Hackers and virus writers use many different ruses in order to trick recipients into infecting their computers.

If you receive a message similar to the ones shown above, DO NOT open any attachments that arrive with the email. DO NOT click on any links included in the email. The best way to protect yourself from threats of this nature is to ensure that your computer is protected by up-to-date anti-virus software and an Internet firewall.

I have no clue whether you are right or wrong.

Computer software husband chimes in, "I don't know if that's right or wrong."

I'll take your word for it. Thanks for posting, as always, Floo'gy --

PS. Off topic:

Are you old enough to remember a song with the lyrics, "Flat Foot Floogy with the Floy-floy..." from 1938??

Fats Waller
