*cry*
So at work they asked me to implement a web service, although two months ago I didn't even know what "web service" means, but somehow I figured something out and cobbled something together with Apache Tomcat, and the security guy said this was a sensible idea but then it turns out that the networks guy is too clueless to be able to install Tomcat on Solaris and we can't get any support because we're using Solaris on a free licence, so I've got to rewrite my web service using the Sun Java System application server which is a great big honking beast of a program and it slows my machine down to a painful crawl, but my requests for more RAM will go ignored because it takes ages to get anything in this place, and I can't manage to get the Sun application server to talk to the database anyway, and the networks guy keeps asking me stuff about the application server and the Java installation even though I know NOTHING about Solaris because I'M A FREAKING DEVELOPER NOT A SYSADMIN, but anyway while I wait for him to set this thing up I have something else to do which involves me having to understand a 4,000 line program written in a language so brain-damagingly awful it makes COBOL look elegant and the only way I can access the source code is by printing it out on fanfold paper - all 60 pages of it - and I'll only get the requirements out of the users one drip at a time because we don't have business analysts and they make the developers manage their projects even though we have no authority to get other people to do stuff and we don't have any source code control system because they don't believe in it and basically I HAVE TO GET A BETTER JOB THAN THIS!!!

8. Linux????
Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 10:59 AM by LSK
Im technically a developer too but I do everything under the sun here. I have written programs, debug a brazilian more programs, debugged servers, setup servers, backups, etc etc etc.

You are better off learning new things and expanding. Thats how you stay employed in IT.

So did you write the webservice in Java?

PS if you think you've got problems, I was at work all day yesterday because we were upgrading our main database and the fixes that worked on the test database didnt work on the live system and we had to make work arounds with some stored procedures at 9pm last night.

19. Learning new stuff is cool
I had to learn Java in order to do this, and I'm very grateful for THAT. I also learned stuff about Tomcat and Apache Axis, which I'm sure will be useful.

It's just that I'm surrounded by incompetents and the whole place is dysfunctional, which together made me need to SCREAM.

29. Here, Oracle PL/SQL and Forms
It's seriously unexciting. At my previous job I wrote lots of C, which I liked much better, but very little opportunity for that here. I know nothing of Microsoft stuff - I use Windows at work because I am forced to, but deep down I only really like Unix.

33. i use to be anti-microshaft/linux lover
But that was years ago and have since not cared so much about it anymore. They use Microshaft servers at my work and I guess I have just accepted that if I want job security, its pretty good to be a Microshaft programmer.

I do still have linux servers at home and linux serves as my firewall and fileservers.

35. Don't get me wrong
if they said, "write xyz using Visual Studio .Net" then I'd do it without a word of complaint. They pay me to program and I'll write whatever they want in whatever they want. My appreciation for it or lack thereof is not an issue.

11. do they pay you even remotely well for this pleasure?
cause when my job sucks I just remember I get to leave it and go spend the money they pay me to waste my time. Not much in the way of job satisfaction but feels like I just got away with something... "they just paid me what to let me do what?" sad I know, but it gets me thru the bad weeks and months.

We used to poke fun at the former Labour Party leader, Neil Kinnock, because he had a habit of speaking in very long sentences. People said it was a good job he wasn't German, because if he was talking past tense we would have to wait half an hour just to discover what he was talking about.
