Our crazy Bosnian redneck neighbor and his friends cut down a tree
For us yesterday... a 90-foot white oak (I think) that was dying. The cheapest estimate I got was $1,150. OMG. We don't have that kind of money. He was like, "Well, me and my friends can do it -- we do it all the time."

It involved three mean, a fishing rod, lots of rope, a monster pick-up truck, a huge chainsaw, and some beer.

We were petrified -- because insurance would so not pay for anything.

I couldn't look, the SO shrieked, there was a huge thud.... success! It missed his storage building by three feet and crushed his wheelbarrow, but success!!!!

As I always say: rednecks won't spend the money if they can do something themselves -- even if they have the money.

We're replacing the wheelbarrow and getting he and his family a gift card to Outback -- he wouldn't take any money.

Thank gods for Bosnian rednecks who don't mind lesbians...

1. Not bad
I've only done it with 60 feet spruces

It works but, it's only problematic when you have no space or if the tree is leant to the house

2. There was a very small space it could fall in
Because of all of the other trees -- it was about 15 feet from our house, 20 from his.

I've never seen anyone do that before with such a big tree. It was nerve-wracking -- but pretty cool!

5. I didn't know there were Bosnian Rednecks, either
See my Redneck thread, too, please. I am getting very confused at how often this term is being used lately.

10. Hahahaha -- I will -- where's teh thread?
I am NOT anti-redneck per se -- I come from a long line of rednecks. However, rednecks with cognitive dissonance "disease" drive me bonkers -- and most of my relatives are like that...

6. Do you think he was a redneck in Bosnia, or is it an acquired trait?
:silly:

My neighbor hired a tree expert to take down one of his pines and I must say the way the pros do it is a thing of beauty, even if it is more costly.

8. I think he was one in Bosnia
Because he acts EXACTLY like my relatives.

Even the amateur chopping down was amazing -- they had the tree fall into a space only about 8-10 feet wide....

20. Start writing - seriously. It would SO make a great TV show
 If Howie Mandel can make a living having people make fools outta themselves with multiple Vannas totin attache cases, you outta make a killing writing the adventures of Bosnian Rednecks!

And you have to share the proceeds with the neighbors ;)

9. Thanks Pegs -- me too!
It was REALLY nice of him and his buddies to help us out... and they refused to take a cent from us. That's why we're going to get them a GC to some place nice -- they saved up over $1,000 we really didn't have.

16. Wow..
.... that's a big tree. Few trees get that big in TX :)

I've cut down a boatload of trees, but few over 40 feet or so. Once they get even that big, it's kind of a white-knuckle deal for me. Sometimes the tree has a mind of its own and does not do what you were expecting it to do :)

17. Do you have ANY FUCKING IDEA of the potential liability?
I don't mean to shout at you, because I like you a lot, but what if one of them had gotten hurt?

I'll tell you what: you'd have lost your house, that's what.

Please, please don't do that again.

Redstone

21. That's a tough decision to make, but Redstone is right.
We had some friends use a guy who was not licensed and did not carry insurance. When he cut down the tree, it fell onto their neighbors house and went through the roof. They were lucky that their neighbors were cool about it and only asked that their roof be repaired. They could have lost a lot of money!!

It is tough to resist a "good deal" -- but please be careful next time. We would all love for you to keep your house!!

19. A fishing rod?
Rope, chainsaw, beer... okay, that all makes sense. But WTF did they do with the fishing rod that would make any difference to a 90-foot tree????
