4. The paint probably wasn't much of the problem
Elephants are very fragile animals. One of the things that will destroy thier bodies the fastest is not being able to move freely. In the wild they roam over large distances and will typically move several miles in a day. Being confined in a small space, as the elephant painted up in the Banksy exhibit was, is astonishingly bad for thier joints, and a health risk not worth taking when elephants die of arthritis and infected sores on thier feet. Additionally elephants are very social animals, so keeping one in a stressful situation (a constant parade of strange people, probably a lot of flashes from cameras, the echoing of people talking) with no other elephants nearby for socialization or confort is psychologically abusive.
