John Coltrane, American jazz saxophonist
(September 23rd, 1926--July 17th, 1967)

Fundamental jazz musician of the late 1940s through to his death. Model standard for saxophonists after him. Innovator in style and form, pursuing even avant-garde jazz at the end of his life. Prolific recorder of dozens of albums in less than two decades. One of the greatest musicians of any genre in the twentieth century.

6. A group here in town just unveiled a statue commemorating John
Edited on Sat Sep-23-06 01:46 PM by NewWaveChick1981
Coltrane on his 80th b'day. He grew up here. :) It's one of this town's few claims to fame, besides Fantasia Barrino and the International Home Furnishings Market. :P

9. It's a complete disgrace...
that there's not a three-day weekend for his birthday and that North Carolina hasn't been renamed Coltraneland in his honour.

10. RIP, Trane...
...God. What a loss...you wonder where he could have gone in the years since, that he hadn't already been? I heard him at Newport in '65...an incredibly strong memory...
