between a former friend who, earlier this year (before I severed our friendship for a loooong list of reasons. He's 36 and a college graduate), asked me quite seriously while we were watching the Liam Neeson film Kinsey: "Did they have gay people back then?" Yes, he was serious, yes he was baffled.

a classmate of mine when I took a college anthropology course in the early 1990s. We got into a class discussion about particular monuments and temples of ancient peoples, and this girl starts up about how everything was a phallic symbol. Fair enough, that's discussed quite frequently, but she wouldn't let up, getting angrier and angrier, pointing out heaps of things in ancient AND modern times that are phallus centered. I was normally the quiet/shy type in class, but when she piped up about tampons being phallic symbols (yes, she actually did), I had to speak up. She got rather flustered and looked like a tick about to pop when I asked, "Well, what would you think they should be shaped like? A rubik's cube??"
