Poll question: Where does your sexual orientation fall on the Kinsey Scale?
Edited on Fri Sep-22-06 04:01 PM by haruka3_2000
I'm just killing time until I go into NYC, so I figured I'd post this. I'm a 5, FWIW.

Edited to add: There is no decent link online for a test. There's one I found on OKCupid, but it's useless.

The scale is based on attraction/experience and the average adult can figure that out for themselves better than an online test.

I bet most of those zeros came from guys, though. Women are more likely to admit they're not a 0.

Am I some sort of freak? I can look at women no problem, but do I want to have sex with one-no. Isn't that what the question is asking or is it more subjective?

30. It's unusual but not impossible
Women are more likely to define themselves somewhere between one and five than men, who cluster a bit more at the one and six categories. Still, there are women who are exclusively hetero or homosexual.

37. Well, it depends on what "incidentally" means
According to Kinsey, 1/3 of males have had a "homosexual experience" (whatever that is). So I'm guessing that means that 2/3 could count themselves as a 0. Depending on what "incidentally" means, of course.

Really just can't comprehend what women see in men. We are pretty disgusting creatures when you look at us. A naked man is not a pretty sight. This is not a fear, or macho thing...I don't give a damn what people think of me.

I'm not full of shit, just because you assume everyone views the world like you do.

73. I actually looked it up before I posted
It has nothing to do with how I see the world, and more to do with what the Kinseys and later sex researchers have found about human sexual behavior. Completely homosexual or heterosexual people- zeroes and sixes on the scale- are a minority. That's not my opinion, that's what six decades of research tells us about how people express thier sexuality.

77. There is a difference between being a minority...
and "being full of shit".

I doubt the minority part, but do agree many people fall into a range.

FYI, the Kinsey scale and study has been blasted in the past by statisticians for multiple errors and as someone involved in more hard sciences, I usually can quickly find lots of problems with any people/social research studies (too many variables; too difficult to get samples that translate to larger populations, too subjective data), so I don't put much stock in them.

Anyway, I can say I'm a zero without any qualms as I know myself and what makes me tick regardless of any study that says I don't.

78. As I said, statisticly
Individuals may be telling the truth, as zeroes and sixes do occur, but the odds that half the people in this large a group are exclusively hetero in thought and deed are vanishingly small, no matter what researcher looks at the data.

83. Their statistics are crap though.
Sure, looking at their data without question, all researchers would agree with you.

The point is their data is practically worthless. I'd be happy to look at any report you want to reference online that shows in detail the method, extrapolation logic, controls, sample size & metrics, etc. The problem with some of the social studies is that once you factor in all the variables, the margin of error extend to the general population approaches 50%....you might as well throw a dart. Which is also why so many sexuality reports refute each other (depends on what you select for).

Fun question though.

102. You also said "full of shit". If you don't want huffy responses...
...don't throw down gauntlets. I also answered zero, which based on the definitions provided is the best answer. I think there's a social tendency in the west for men to define themselves in one category or another--with straight being clearly the favored selection. So the majority filing in at "0" are almost certainly telling their truth. To which you respond "full of shit." Tsk, tsk, not very nice. ;)

But seriously, instead of throwing accusations, we might want to look at definitions. Studies that put the majority of the population between the two extremes my be using some other standard than what most people here are thinking of. I hear sexuality, and I assume it means either what I've done in the past or what floats my boat today in terms of eye candy. I think most people would go with that definition. Studies that come up with larger numbers in the "gray areas" may be looking at some abstract for sexual propensities--like, "do you think this picture of David Bowie is pretty?" could earn you 4 points on a scale of 1 to 100, hence losing your status as a zero.

Without knowing more about what the studies mean and what the respondents to this study means, you really can't cry bullshit on anyone. Just a few thoughts...

It's mostly based on your own personal attraction. People should be able to figure out who they're attracted to, better than an online test.

Hell, my brother is incredibly attractive. All sorts of men are "attractive" to me. I've had a few sexual encounters with other men but just out of curiosity. Though they were fun encounters I have never, ever been "moved" by another man the way I am by women...

so does this make me a 0 or a .5?

36. Correct -- it doesn't have to be experience -- just attraction or want
I think several men are scrumptiously cute and sexy, but I have no desire to boink them. My mom and sister are straight, but think Angelina Jolie is sexy... and my sister said she would make out with Storm from Rockstar. So, even though they would probably never bink a woman, they think some are sexy.

Now, my semi-Freeper BIL thinks Johnny Depp is sexy...

...I have a friend who's mom to 3 kids and loves dating men, but swears they don't know how to give head, so she has lots of sex with women. Guys, too. Some'll take a blow job from anyone.

And look what goes on in prisons--athough like rape, I think that's more about control than sexual attraction.

68. I am having a tough time with this
whoda thunk. Is it about sex organs or love? I should have listened to my heart that told me I was bi-sexual when I was all of 8 years old. I had a moment of clarity then, but I ignored it.

I can't really rate myself though. It feels fucked up to me, though I've never had this kind of reaction to the Kinsey scale before, lol.

70. Attraction & experience, not love.
Honestly, I could form a deep relationship with a man, but sexually I have a very strong preference for women.

84. to me it's backwards.
I mean, to me the definition of bisexuality is like what I just went through with my last girlfriend; like the thought of not having that person in your life, losing their love, makes you wanna jump off a bridge or something. Apparently I can feel this way about a woman or a man.

I don't think someone is bisexual just because they might let a girl lick their cookie so their boyfriend can get a hard-on. I guess because I can't separate love out from sex to begin with. I'm just feeling like a weirdo with this thing.

i've got sexcapdes and a few relationships with women scattered through my life.

it's men i prefer -- and they make up the majority of all my experiences. i love men.

but i started off at thirteen too -- and there are some years there where i don't think gender much matters.

i want to add that i've had sex with many men who would self identify as very straight -- and several on many occasions.
it's just part of our friendship.

79. In my 42 years, I have never had any attraction to a dude
I remember being about 4 or 5 and looking at women and knowing I wanted to do something with them, but I didn't know what..lol.

People like Kinsey and Freud were whack-jobs. All that psychological babble is pretty much garbage. I used to like it until I studied it more and realized that it means nothing.

85. Kinsey made field studies
When I was 5 I didn't want to do anything with girls.
I must have been a late bloomer, I know.

There also people out of the mainstream, who were attacked like Reich
http://www.orgonelab.org/wrhistory.htm

If you call Freud and Kinsey whack-job what is Reich?

88. Don't remember much about Reich
I remember the name, but not much of what he did. I lost interest in all that stuff years ago. I have no problem with the study of the human mind, sexuality and the like, but I think most of it is way off base because there are millions of outside stimuli to actually make anything even close to a cut and dry conclusion.

93. the brain is the center
and it decides what is going on. That is pretty easy to see with hypnosis, for example
you can hypnotize a woman and say a coin is her clitoris, the hypnotist can rub the coin and bring her to orgasm.
http://wendi.com/video/html/the_big_o.html

Or just give her a key word and it will work

I don't think we really know how the mind works, maybe all those alphabet agencies with programs like MK-Ultra
now it but the average person has probably no idea.

86. I agree to an extent
in that this culture is so completely fucked up about sexuality expecially coming out of the Victorian era that how could anything said about sexuality be even an approximation of the truth, particularly by Freud.

Kinsey I don't know too much about, I've read studies but don't remember too much. It seems like his focus leaned more to the male side. I think this is kind of helpful though; it was quite ahead of it's time, seeing sexuality as a spectrum and not two points at opposite ends of an abyss.

89. I think we are fucked up about sexuality for other reasons
Of course it is a psychological thing, but it is more to do with our innate need to "belong" than it is a genetic make-up. It's more of our problem with our own egos than anything else. Look at the online dating market, it is a multi-billion dollar industry.

92. Laid? I think I remember something about that..LOL
No, not necessarily about being hetero, but having a sexual identity that you feel will be acceptable as being "normal". People have hang-ups about sexuality because they don't feel comfortable in their own situation.

Almost from the day we are born we are constantly being confronted with the separation of the sexes. Blue for boys, pink for girls and so on. On a side note, it wasn't until fairly recent history that it was the other way around.

As we grow into teens we are pressured to confront our sexuality. That is about the time that we get out sex education from school and our parents. It becomes saturated with most of us by hanging with friends and figuring out what the hell is going on.

Around the times of us in our teen years we feel we need to make sure our peers know that we are "normal" and we crave a g/f or b/f so we can show everyone that we are just like them and we are like the people on TV, in magazines and on the billboards.

It would take me forever to put all of this down, but I can say that most of us don't get passed the need to be looked at, admired and have people validate our sexual attractiveness. Just look at the picture threads here. What is the purpose of them? 9 times out of 10 it is so people can post their picture and hope to get some sort of feedback on how good they look.

I don't know if any of this even made sense...LOL

94. I see what you mean
I know mine was skewed by my atmosphere because I knew what I was pretty early but then I kind of chopped about half of it off. I did this later on too when I came 'out'. Now I don't feel like I 'belong' anywhere but at least I have some peace of mind.

You are right it's hard to get to a place where you are sure you are what you are unless you are just naturally a zero. Weird, because that's probably the minority but this is what this culture demands, how the hell did that happen? Anyway, I know now, but it took so damn long to get there. I think Kinsey did a good thing in a way; but even so it's hard for me to put myself on that scale cause I'm attracted to people not sex organs, they are kind of secondary.

95. I have an attraction to people too, and not sexually
I have some friends that I love dearly. The guys in my band I have known since we were little kids and I love them, but I never felt a sexual attraction to them. I think a lot of people get confused because they are taught early on that having love for someone of the same sex is "gay"..lol.

I can't speak for everyone on Earth, but as for me, I rarely concern myself with what people think. I wear what I want, I speak as I want, I love who I want and I do what I want. Sexuality is about as important to me as what I am having for dinner tonight. It just is and I don't mindfuck myself over it.

87. HAHAHA...me too. You know that stage your supposed to go
through when you find girls icky and want to spend time playing with other boys. I NEVER went through that stage. I used to think the other boys were just calling girls icky because it was an accepted thing to do, not because they actually thought girls were icky. Me..no way..I LOVED girls...they were so pretty and, even though I was still innocent, all I wanted to do was be with them. I remember telling my brother at 5 years old that I liked this girl (Natasha..still remember her name!) in my class.

97. I'm not sure.
I'd assume a 0, or maybe a 1.

While I can appreciate the attractiveness of other women, I've never found myself particularly attracted to one. However, I wouldn't rule out the possibility.

I did kiss a girl in high school. We were friends, and we figured we wouldn't know if we liked other women unless we tried it. I didn't get much out of that.
