What has KitchenWitch been up to?
Hi everyone!

The move went okay, even though the car broke down in Cisco Utah (an exit which has NO SERVICES, by the way!) Thank the gods for AAA. California has been HOT! Yes, I know, no humidity, but it is still damn hot!

The kids are settled in at their new schools. I have issues with the school district not providing buses AT ALL. My daughter's school is like a mile away (she is in Kindergarten) and my son's is like 3 miles away and located on a road whose speed limit is 60 mph! Needless to say, I am driving them to school.

As far as getting settled in here, it has been difficult. My inlaws told us not to bring any furniture, so we did not (other than our bed). Then they proceeded to give away the living room, dining room and the master bedroom furniture away. Meanwhile, my parents have custody of my dining room set, 1800 miles away! So we went to IKEA and got dressers for the master bedroom. As far as the living room goes, we have two weird chairs and a beat up old sofabed. In addition to taking all the furniture, they barely made space for us to put our stuff. We are still in boxes (other than our clothes) and will be until they leave in October.

I feel as if all I have been doing has been rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

Oh well. I will adjust!

:hi:

9. The philosophy of the district here is
They want all kids to walk to school. Yeah, my kindergartner is going to walk a mile to and from school every day. :eyes:

13. the only kids in my district who get buses
are special needs kids. They divided up the district so that the schools are within a certain distance, then state law says they don't have to provide buses. I think it's a mile in elementary school and 2 or 3 for high school. They figure the kids can either walk or get a ride...and the district doesn't have to pay for buses. If the choice is between music programs or buses...I'll take the music. These days, that's kind of what's happening.

But I guess I was spoiled by living in Minnesota for so long.

18. remember,
California passed that proposition so that they can't raise property taxes to pay for schools.
I don't mind the bus situation as long as there are decent sidewalks for the kids to walk on. We had that here...and when it got too cold in the winter, I drove them.

20. true!
I still would not mind paying some sort of "user fee" for at least one of my kids to be bussed.

Oh well, we will adjust. I am hoping that my son starts to make some connections at school and maybe start up a carpool. (he is 15 and not able to drive yet.)
