Baby dies in mother's vomit

An East Harlem mother who police said left her 3-month-old daughter to die in a bucket of vomit has been charged in the child's death, police said.

Niah Ford died Saturday afternoon after she was found unconscious in an East 117th Street shelter were she lived, police said.

The city medical examiner ruled yesterday that Ford had died of asphyxiation and drowning, police said.

The mother, Savarin DeJesus, 18, was arrested yesterday after she told police that she left the child alone and found her drowned when she returned.

DeJesus was not initially charged because police were awaiting the results of an autopsy, police said.

"A three-month-old just doesn't walk into a bucket," a police official said.

DeJesus was being held last night on charges of criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child.

A woman who answered the telephone at Dejesus' group home, the Fox House, declined to comment on the baby's death.

3. I don't know
She was at a shelter though. Wouldn't the people at the shelter do something. I don't know.

4. This is just horrible. Beyond imagining.
I cannot deny that there is a part of me that needs to inform you that you can't dust for vomit, but that is only because there isn't enough whistling possible to get anyone past this particular graveyard...the reality of this is just horrific. Leaving aside the question of who, exactly, has a full bucket of vomit just lying around, it's just awful beyond words what happened to that little baby. It doesn't seem possible, and the scary thing is not just that it's possible but that it happened. I can't believe people, sometimes. And here I was trying, at last, to get a bit of sleep...I may just have shot all my chances at that today.

Rest in Peace, Niah...I don't know why this happened to you. I just trust you're somehow better off for having such a short time in this world.
