Seems to be somewhat in "The Tailor of Panama" vein, ie, comparatively jaunty, considering the subject matter.

1. Update (& Sunday morning kick)

Area libraries didn't have it yet-- but I nearly got killed on the way to the second one (different county) by a minivan driver who didn't understand the concepts of "merge" and "rearview mirror." While this is the kind of thing that might be appropriate in a thriller, still I think next time I'll think to look up the library catalog online instead of taking my life into my hands for a trip that might be futile anyway.

2. He's one of my favorite authors

I love the way his novels evolve in an eliptical style. I loved the last one, "Absolute Friends" - he has a real ear for mittel-European accents.

3. Updated update: it's really really good!

(Replying to you instead of to myself since obviously nobody else here cares.) It's the best-written thing he's done in 20 or 30 years, and that's really saying something. I'm only up to p. 88 so I can't say whether it's the best overall in that time, but it certainly starts very well indeed.
