It's quite special to me - it was the first song performed at the first concert I ever saw with someone from Led Zeppelin (mind you Bonham died before I had a chance to see LZ). So Robert Plant was first in 1988 and he opened with "In the Evening" - still a personal favorite of mine off of "In through the Out Door"

It's funny....I have that JPJ version on my YouTube favorites list...what a great performance. I think JPJ got the short end of the stick of the whole Zeppelin experience, considering how Plant and Page have treated him since Bonzo's death. I really admire his musicianship...plus, the guy arranged "Sunshine Superman" and produced the BH Surfers' Independent Worm Saloon!

I would gladly crawl across a mile of broken glass to have the JPJ version as our song, my dear. But I don't do windows.

From many of the books I've read about Led Zeppelin, JPJ was definitely the quiet one who I suspect dabbled some in the drugs & women but in general was more into the homelife with wife & family. At one point during the LZ years, he was considering leaving LZ to become chorale master at some organization in England.

As for the Page & Plant reunion, I'm suspecting the reason they didn't invite JPJ was if JPJ was there then it would have been a Led Zeppelin reunion. Page & Plant did actually put new material out at time along with the "No Quarter" live album from the first tour they did. Had the project been a disappointment then it would have tarnished the Led Zeppelin legend which pretty much makes LZ CDs and DVDs sell like hotcakes even to generations who weren't even alive when LZ existed.

I keep hoping that they do all get together and do one last LZ tour - I mean those 3 aren't getting any younger. One day one of the original 3 will be gone and then the reunion is pretty much shot!


Edit Note: But you still wouldn't get the Page & Plant version of "That's the Way" - I mean I expect some sort of mind-blowing experience for that song!"

I adore Robert Plant's solo work but the LZ work was definately better. I would think if you're just starting to buy some of his work, get 'Sixty-Six to Timbuktu'. It's not only a greatest hits collection, but also includes some of the recordings done before he was in Zeppelin; although I have to skip over his version of "Hey Joe" - it wasn't that good. I still have an special place in my heart for his first 2 albums - "Pictures at Eleven" and "Principle of the Moment" although they both have a heavy 80's feel to them. POTM is especially memorable to me - my favorite all time song is "In the Mood" and during the second chorus of the song at Hersherypark in the front row at my first Robert Plant concert - I actually held his hand while he song it.

I also strongly recommend Page & Plant's "Walking to Clarksdale". That came out in the 90s after the Unledded tour and they were wise to not call themselves Led Zeppelin with that album because it's not very Zeppelin-like. Charlie Jones actually wrote most of the music for him (No relations to John Paul Jones, he's actually Robert Plant's son-in-law and bassist for both the P&P album and most of Plant's later albums). But Clarksdale is still a very good album but a far cry from the old LZ days. Some interesting guitar work from Page in that one
