Do your local public schools still have recess, if so how much?
We had two 15 minute periods a day when I was in 6th grade about ten years ago, the other 6th grades in the district only had one 15 minute period (whenever recess wasn't taken away). They have built schools in Atlanta and other places without playgrounds. I guess mine still hasn't since they put in new playground equipment.

1. 8th grade son has 20 min recess at lunchtime. 4th grade son
has 20 min at lunchtime and 15 min mid afternoon. The real young grades in our district have 15 min in the morning too.

2. Our neighborhood school has recess
Since I don't have children, I don't know how long recess is.

3. yeah, but barely...
for our elementary schools...one 15 minute recess, around 9:45am, adn then lunch at 11:30am...and thats it...when I sub, and the kids are very good, I take them out again in the afternoon for another recess...

For high school..just a 40 minute lunch...

When I was in elementary, it was two recesses, one in the morning, and then one in the afternoon, with a 30 minute lunch in between...

4. Mine has two fifteen minute recesses...
one in the morning and one in the afternoon...and then there's lunch recess: whatever time's left over after he's decided what he's not going to eat and grabbed the cookies.

5. They all seem to have
I couldn't tell you how long, but one can hear the sound of the sprogs running around and squealing (b.t.w. that wasn't a criticism, I'm glad that they're enjoying themselves).

My Grammar school (ages 11-18) had a 20 minutes break after the first four lessons, two more lessons then lunch-hour, two more then home.

7. Half hour lunch, half hour recess, daily, and PE once a week ...
which is entirely too little, but that is modern American schools.

13. Yes, that is what our district has, too.
One P.E. teacher travels to 3 buildings. It's crazy.

8. Our school has a combined hour for lunch and recess. Pretty good.
Only 25 minutes for PE though. I remember when PW was an hour long.

9. Man, times have sure changed
When I was a kid, even through highschool, lunch recess was an hour.

School without playgrounds. Reminds me of that Cat Stevens song 'Where do the Children Play?"

Poor kids desperately need the fresh air and physical break, not just time enough to scarf down some food and get back to it --- no wonder they're putting all the kids on psychotropic drugs now so they can handle their forced zombiehood.

11. Your high school had recess?!?
All we had was a thirty minute lunch and five minutes between classes.

My most recent experience was a private kindergarten where I subbed. The kids had three twenty minute recesses and a half hour lunch. It seemed like I spent the whole day lining them up to take them some place or other. They never spent more than forty minutes without some kind of break (either recess or going to another classroom for art, library or P.E.)

and schools are supposed to be serving healthier foods. In keeping with that, our district switched to a 30-minute recess before lunch. (It used to be right after lunch.) Their thinking is that the kids will be hungrier after running around before lunch, instead of running off their lunch. I don't know how this affects the obesity issue, though..... Plus, the menu is still the same. I haven't seen any decrease in the serving of fat, salt, and sugar.

2nd grade: one 15 min. recess
5th grade: one 15 min. recess
6th grade: zero recess
10th grade: zero recess plus random urine teasting.

The seeds of fascism are in the schools.

19. This cutting of recess is utterly revolting, and bad for the kids.
If we lived in a school district with no recess for our 10-year-old, they'd be hearing from me.

I used to have it. Now I have 1/2 for lunch, but I'm done in 10 minutes and they let you go into a enclosed courtyard area.

22. When I was in elementary school down in Florida...
Edited on Sat Sep-23-06 06:09 PM by Reverend_Smitty
this was 89-95 we never had recess but we did have gym every day, so that at least got us outside and moving, when I moved back to NJ for my middle school years, I went to Catholic school and we had recess every day but gym only once a week. However this was an inner city Catholic school so our recess games consisted of touch football (try doing that in a skirt) and wall ball in the school parking lot...which is fine for the older kids but it must have stunk for the little kids. So I guess it balances out...I know the elementary schools in my neighborhood have the recess every day and gym once a week thing too.

On edit: I think the gym times were 30 or 40 minutes, but I can't remember because it was a long time ago and the recess times were 20-25 minutes...basically whenever the teacher felt like teaching again
