I think my roommate is obsessed with exercising
He just got home from playing racquetball and is now on riding his bike on an indoor trainer.

The other day he rode his bike on the indoor trainer for at least three hours while watching football.

No, he is not training for a decathlon or triathlon or any athlon.

I just think he's become an exercise fanatic.

Oh but if I call him obsessed then he freaks out. Of course in our culture it's fine to be fanatical about exercising.

3. My next door neighbor is like that too.

She goes to the health club every morning after she takes her kids to school. Then I usually see her out walking in the afternoon after lunchtime. Then she goes on another walk at night when her husband is home. I wish I had her time and motivation.

Edited for spelling

9. mmm see that's the thing
you think she is exercising for a few minutes three times a day, but if she's an exercise bulimic, unknown to those of ya'll with actual real jobs and lives, she may be exercising six, seven, eight hours a day

the OP witnessed a 3 hr exercise binge, but who knows what longer binges have been hidden from him out of shame

trust me, you DON'T wish you had her time and motivation, your joints are something that it would be nice if they lasted lifelong instead of giving out around age 40...or even earlier

4. did he recently kick another habit?
I had a friend who did heroin, then kicked that for chain smoking, then kicked that for obsessing about exercise and food (macrobiotic stuff). Really very strict about her exercise regimen - seemed like an addictive personality, but at least she finally found a healthy one (she never dieted like mad - wasn't skinny, just worked out a lot).

Got A's in a double major all through UCLA while strung out on heroin, though. One smart cookie, I'm so glad she lived through that phase...

6. There are worse things......
After all your post could have said, "I think my roommate is obsessed with smoking crack."

7. Obsession is inherently unhealthy
I'd be worried too, especially since he can't talk about it calmly or explain in a rational way why his behavior shouldn't be a concern.

8. i dated a man with exercise bulimia
i don't know if it has a more modern name now, this was many years ago obviously

there is nothing you can do, you've said your piece, i really don't know what else you can do

if he is lucky, the injury that brings it to a doctor's attention will be relatively minor, there are drugs now that often if not always control these binges

my heart goes out to you and your friend

10. Does he have an eating disorder??
My sister had a friend with Bulemia -- she exercised all the time. The thought of gaining an ounce was too much for her.

11. Don't worry, the cosmic balance is preserved.
I do absolutely nothing, to the extent that I almost feel guilty about having legs and have often thought of donating mine to someone that actually needs them.

Thus, between your roommate and me, the overall exercise ratio of the planet is preserved at an acceptable level. And I kinda feel like I'm performing a service for humanity. No thanks necessary.

12. My dentist was addicted to running -- he completely wore out his knees.
He was warned to stop and didn't. I think people get addicted to the endorfins.
