A Wood County supervisor resigned Tuesday after he was accused of trying to hire an exotic dancer for sex while attending a government convention in La Crosse.
James E. Gignac, 64, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., said he contacted police Monday after the woman demanded money even though he had decided calling her was a mistake.
He was arrested on a misdemeanor for patronizing prostitution and released on a $250 signature bond.
“I wanted them to know what was going on in their community,” Gignac said Tuesday in an interview with Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune. “I was trying to do the right thing, and I got cited for it.”
An undercover female officer later convinced the woman to meet Monday at another hotel on the pretense of having sex with her and her husband, where she was arrested, according to police reports.
Nicole C. Vangeertruy, 21, of 433 Rose St., could be charged with prostitution and bail jumping.
Gignac, who was in La Crosse for the Wisconsin Counties Association annual
convention, reportedly paid Vangeertruy $200 to have sex, but she insisted on a condom and left to buy one, according to the police report. When she did not return, Gignac called police.
In a telephone interview with the Tribune after she was released from jail Tuesday, Vangeertruy denied she ever agreed to have sex with Gignac or the undercover officer and said she actually rebuffed offers from both.
Vangeertruy said she did demand Gignac pay her for the call, and left with $100.
Gignac said Tuesday he tried to cancel but was told the dancer already was en route.
“I know what I did was wrong; I tried to stop it,” Gignac said, adding he was on pain medication and had a couple drinks before making the call.
Gignac was elected to the Wood County Board in April and had previously served on the board from 2002 to 2004. He is a retired Wisconsin Rapids fire chief.
