59. There are some positions
the problem is that they want foreign nationals - not just my department but all over the Corporation. It's difficult to get hired here if you are American. I was lucky in that my position is one that many foreign nationals cannot, or don't want to, do. I'm a legal assistant. Over the years, we have hired lawyers for legal assistants' positions and the results have not been happy. After a few years they want to be hired as lawyers and it's the department's position not to do so. It has made for tension.

78. I know!
I am an expert on getting the shaft!

My first job lasted just eight months, but fortunately then it was the dot-com years and even a banana with eight years' experience could get a job programming.

My second job lasted two years three months, and they were closing our office and were going to move us to another city. I took voluntary redundancy (that rocked).

My third job lasted nearly four years before they downsized me - I walked into a new job (the current one) immediately and used the redundancy cash to upgrade the windows in my apartment.

So now I am on my fourth programming job since 1998. :D

82. lol!
"...even a banana with eight years' experience could get a job programming." You have a way of putting things.

Your second job sounds like my first one ... they were moving to TX and we had just moved to FL. They paid me more to stay in FL and leave the company than they were paying to move. And the next job paid more. What a difficult decision!

At least they gave you some chunks of change. Harleydad got layed off once and all they gave him was a week's pay. That was damn scary! But he got a job that afternoon. Whew!

One good thing is that you still know how to find a job. When you stay with a company for a long time, it can be intimidating to go out and look again.

The shaft ain't a fun thing to get, that's for sure! I'm glad you've made the best of it.

And that may be 2 years too long at this point. I'm thinking about moving on.

This place would fall down without me because I have no backup, my boss doesn't know how to do my job anymore, and it would take 4 months for me to get someone over the worst of the learning curve. So you would think they would be anxious to keep me. I have warned them I may leave.

Oh well... We'll see what happens and how they handle it.

79. Aw, billy ...
I somehow knew that about you. That means we could visit together without a problem! :bounce: :woohoo: :yourock:

And you still ARE a fucking ace programmer! :pals: I've forgotten a lot of it, though. Partly from not using it and partly from the illness. Wish I'd saved some of my work, just to prove I could do it once. :(

81. If you ever felt the need to try your hand again
there are so many open source projects out there that could use the assistance.

And the free GNU C compiler (gcc) is widely acknowledged as the finest compiler for the x86.

And thanks. :loveya:

84. If I get to that point,
I will definitely look to you for some guidance ... if that's OK. I loved doing the work when I was in the middle of a good project. I'm hoping I haven't completely lost my ability to learn.

You're welcome. :loveya:

We work for nothing ... except love. Hours are crazy. Day and night, 24/7. They poop, we scoop. They beg, we feed. They puke, we clean. They purr, we pet.

Before that, twenty-four years with the same employer.

Twenty-four WASTED years.

I should have gone into business for myself a long, long time ago. Way more satisfying, both mentally and fiscally.

So that makes it almost 18 years. I'm a diplomat with the Canadian foreign service. It's kind of a life long career thing. I expect to retire from the diplomatic corps in about 20 years.

96. 3 months
I left my previous job of 5 years to go work at my current job. I even moved to that town so that I wouldn't have a long commute. Little did I know what I was in for. Perhaps I should have been more careful about jumping at the first company that offered me a job at a significantly better amount of pay. I am giving it a good try though. If they fire me, I can get unemployment. If it doesn't get better, I'll start actively looking in a couple of years and be in a much better spot to get a good job somewhere else.

I love my job. Over the years, I've had the opportunity to do all kinds of really exciting things. Of course, it's not exactly a rose garden, and there have been a few close calls, but I got through them. I walk to work, or take public transportation in bad weather. I live and work in a really interesting neighborhood. Good times, good times.

114. Two years in December, and hope at last I have found the job
I will retire from!

I thought I had it 4 jobs ago and the company was sold and our stuff was all relocated to San Antonio

I thought I had it with the next one and the CEO embezzled money and we all lost our jobs

I hoped I had it with the next one and we were all outsourced to India

Mayhe this one is it. I do enjoy my job a great deal and the company is a very good employer. I can certainly hold out another 10 years if they want to keep me on.

I was just moved to the insurance department of the mortgage company I work for to help get people finished repairing their homes. I work exclusively with hurricane victims. I now monitor them and get management to release their insurance money as they need it. I've been very successful so far. Got my first evaluation and it was glowing.

Love my job. Only work 3 days a week. Started when I was 18, also stayed for the great benefits. We have a great retirement package. If I retire at 62, I will probably clear a as much or possibly a little bit more than whatever my salary is at the time.
