Question for the Vegans
Hey, it is a friend of mines birthday, she is a vegan, and I was going to get her this really nice wool sweater because we live in Minnesota where Winter is the best 8 months of the year. Now I know that leather is not cool, but what is the stance on wool. I know it is an animal by-product but the sheep aren't killed for it. Help me out so I don't offend her please.

1. Not cool.

It's definitely not cruelty-free.

2. Wool would be non-vegan
It's good of you to check. My baby sister gave me a wool pea coat a few years back.

3. I think Vegans are concerned with what they eat.
Now, some Vegans can also be animal rights activists, I guess. However, I believe the key question is whether or not the animal suffers. Are sheep mistreated; do they suffer when the wool is shaved off of them and used to make clothing for humans?

I have no idea.

5. Nah, being vegan is a lifestyle thing and ethical system
A person who consumes no animal products but has no issues with leather, wool, etc would be a strict vegetarian.

26. Sheep get cut to hell when they're sheared
They live outside where there are all sorts of bugs, they get beat up and so on...and then they're sheared by a person who spends all of two and a half minutes cutting off all their wool. Not to mention the fact they aren't sheared during the summer.

It's not THE worst thing you can do to an animal, but it's not exactly a gentle caress either.

19. You're a great friend, mduffy.
Vegans dont do wool--but if you can find a nice, heavy cotton sweater, that'd sure be nice. It's SO great when people find vegan alternatives for necessary stuff. Shopping isn't always fun when it comes to traditionally non-vegan items.

I'd LOVE a gift of a vegan sweater, purse, belt, wallet, portfolio...well, I guess you get the idea.

If you decide that you want to look online for ideas, please ask! There are lots of sites that specialize in vegan clothing and accessories.

:hi:

23. Well
I certainly can't speak to your (cough) intentions--but it's still nice that you've bothered to pay attention. Big points there.

Even 15 years after I went veg, I still received leather goods as gifts (and then had to figure out what to do with them!)

Good luck!

25. I'm not a vegan
but I don't use wool. I found out about how they ship the sheep with no food and water and it just tore me up and I gave away all my wool and haven't gotten any new stuff. If I get something wool for Christmas I just give it to goodwill or something.
