3. Lucinda's a great choice
She's still not very mainstream, or on a big label. So I'd say she's indie.

7. The interesting thing is that his father is a terrific classical pianist.
MrG and I used to go to his concerts when he was younger and his piano playing made me cry. I remember he used to bring his son out on stage with him when he was only 3... Gosh, I'm not even that old. And yet all of a sudden I'm wondering where those intervening years flew off to.

I'm curious. Nada Surf sounds like they might be up my alley, since I love the New Pornographers, Shins, and Teenage Fanclub.

The other indie thread is fun, but I also wanted to find out what indie artists people think are most DESERVING of praise.

Though "The Photo Album" is really good too.

As far as Nada Surf goes, "High/Low" is a classic album in my books.

25. and what defination is that?
I honestly don't know what Indie Music is, its like industrial music, what in the world is industrial music? There are a lot of sub genres, that I have no idea what they are, by definition...of your list Weezer jumps out at me as being the best...with Liz Phair in second.

But I'm trying to limit it to the record label here. I made a couple errors in my above list, though, so you can mention others.

29. hmm....Weezer by that definition
is not indie...they have been on mtv since...94, or so...same with Liz Phair, and quite a number of bands...

By non-mainstream artists...I honestly dont' know any, except my friends band in Sacramento, the PHK....and probably LUXT, of Sacramento as well...but LUXT has opened for big bands, like Rob Zombie, and Rammstein....by non-mainstream, man, that wipes a lot of it out....

they are just ones I have concerning music in general...I consider myself to be a huge music fan, and I dont' even know what some of these labels mean...to me, Industrial is Prodigy, NIN....basically hard techno music...

I could go with that definition.

A couple of the artists in my OP have RIAA ties, but some labels like Koch Records bring along emerging artists. So I'm partly right.

39. I personally go with more of an aesthetic approach.
Though indie is a pretty broad, catch-all kind of distinction, kind of like the word punk in a sense.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_rock

That's what i think when I hear the word indie in reference to music, anyway.

45. Superchunk
I think of them as the quintessential indie artists. Major labels were drooling all over them in the early 90s thinking they had found the next Nirvana. Instead Mac & company just formed their own label. They make a comfortable living putting out quality albums and putting on fine shows but they'll never be truly famous.

50. We have quite a bit in common here, too
It seems we have many of the same pop and indie choices. I added B&S later, and of course Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins and the Shins would be on.

I could expand the list after going through my collection, but it's so big, and I have a nice sample now. But I don't want to forget alt-country, which often has the attitude of indie: there are Kasey Chambers, Martha Wainwright, Mindy Smith, and rebel Steve Earle.
